Ravaged Longing

Her feelings ache within her heart, taunted by the nightmares that fill her restless sleep. So each morning she ties bandages around her chest, and hopes that her sorrows will not leak out. And she wears a bell on a collar, like a cat chasing birds. But it keeps her awake, and the nightmares can't harm her in the daylight.

Not all of her nightmares are bad, she says to her friends. What she doesn't tell them is that in the better ones, he calls for her. Tries to make her come. And she does, because it is only a dream, after all. And she comes because who can resist his charm, his beauty? Like an angel fallen from heaven down to earth, and maybe he is. Or a devil risen from the pits of Hell. It explains the badness she can feel inside him.

Day by day these nightmares tear her apart. Her longing for him tears her apart in its eternal conflict with the one fact that can't be denied. He isn't all that he seems to be, but that thought gets lost. Lost in the abyss her mind has become. Each day her friends get more worried, but she shakes them off and tells them nothing's wrong.

It's all wrong.
