![]() Virtual Reality: A World of Your OwnA Story by [Mackenzie]![]() A short descriptive piece I wrote about 'my ideal room'.![]()
The burning sun beats down upon the hard-baked earth of a windswept plain. Slight breezes create miniature whirlwinds, lifting up the dusty earth and sending it swirling back down. The fine dirt has the consistency of sand, sliding through your fingers as you pick it up. The land is pockmarked with tiny holes, tunnels leading to the catacombs beneath the surface. This labyrinth of tunnels swarms with creatures – little red ants with skin so fine that you can see the blood running through their veins; monstrous lizards with scales that glimmer and gleam in the light, so that they seem to be all of the colours of the rainbow at once; and winding, twisting snakes that hide in the shadows, preying on whatever comes their way. Above ground, only large, dust coloured felines stalk this land, seeming fearsome but shying away from humans. This a barren land, with little food and even less water, and yet creatures continue to live there, thriving in these conditions. Dotted throughout the landscape are hardy plants – cacti in a myriad of colours, with roots planted as firmly as they can be in the constantly shifting sands, and spiny bushes with thick, stiff leaves, cupped to collect what little rainwater falls from the endless blue sky. As you walk upon this plain, your feet leave deep imprints in the dust, footprints that get blown away in seconds under the force of the gales that often strike this place. You close your eyes and take a deep breath, but sandy earth fills your nose and mouth and that is all you can smell, all you can taste. Abruptly the wind stops buffeting you, and you open your eyes. What before was a windswept plain and endless blue sky is now a silvery webbed dome, backed by an endless black abyss. “Your time is up,” a smooth, computer generated female voice intones. The sound echoes around the room, and with a smile you exit the virtual reality chamber. © 2009 [Mackenzie]Author's Note
