Run

Run

A Poem by [Mackenzie]

You appear

In front of my eyes

So solid;

So real.

But you're dead

I saw you die

A ghost?

Am I seeing things?

'Gwen.'

You sound different.

Pained?

Desperate?

I can't tell.

'Gwen, run.'

Run? Why?

I take a step towards you.

'Gwen! Don't!'

Another step.

And another.

'Jake, I'm so happy...'

Tears roll down my cheeks.

Ghosts don't speak.

It's really you.

'Gwen, run, damnit!'

I smile

Ignoring your warnings.

'Run, idiot! Away. Away from me!'

Your face twists.

Anger?

Grief?

Irritation?

I reach out to you.

Further.

And stroke your chill skin.

You cry out with pain.

I recoil;

What else could I do?

Your eyes change.

Hatred?

Annoyance?

No?

Loathing.

'Jake?'

You advance on me.

I hesitate;

My resolve breaks.

I turn and run.
