Firefly

Firefly

A Poem by Seriana

Firefly

Warm vernal air

swells taut around the approaching woodland night.

Puffs of soft white light

dance and glow in silence,

surround.

Lingering,

flutters and shimmers,

one, and two..

three footfalls more,

across the silky dirt path

of this night-blooming forest floor.

They flicker and beam,

tiny miniature vibrating blinks,

waving a visual concerto,

a twinkling chorus upon the eve of Spring

Was it only as children that we were fascinated by the beauty of fireflies? Flitting in the warm sky and we tried to catch them, place them in our jars to light up our bedrooms, and then later release them. I loved this delightful reminder - thank you.

I didn't need to look as your posted image (well I did after reading your poem). I prefer to build my own pictures and your lines helped me with my own canvas. This is exceptionally good work. A pleasure to read. We don't have fireflies where I come from, but I do love looking at them . I have set up twinkling fairy lights round my dressing table mirror, so I get the reflection too. I keep them on all night. They are my own imitation fireflies, glowing in the night's darkness. Second best, but they keep me happy.

You are very welcome Seriana :)
One of my favourite times....where I live they emerge in June in total darkness and rise almost in unison from the forest floor, and on a moonless night they compete with the stars ... you have captured their dance in your words

This poem feels like it takes you to a magical place, full of everything you need. Absolutely beautiful word choices and the title 'Firefly' only drove that point home even more. It feels so sparkly, like such a bright and enchanting poem. Thank goodness you took up writing and enjoyed it because you obviously have so much to share!

My pleasure, I loved it
This brought much nostalgia.
There was a dirt trail between my house and my grandmother's through towering Virginia Pines.
Our pups had worn the trail between us. And the ground of the trail was soft, black dirt. Silky, as you say.
And in the evenings the lightening bugs (as we called them) would sparkle in those pines.
I always consider lightening bugs a romantic thing. They are after all males attracting their mates. And could they do it anymore beautifully?

Thank you for got sharing this beautiful poetry with us.

I just love the glow and flutter of every line. So beautifully voiced... awakening the coming spring and the end of this horrid winter of the world. I never saw a firefly until leaving California and coming east. The first time I glimpsed them I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. Pure magic. :)
