Shackles

Shackles wrapped around your ankles,

Pushed into the river of my tears to slowly drown.

And I thought that nothing could hurt me,

But I guess only you could could see the hole going through my heart.

But then I thought of you leaving,

And how I’d feel.

Which made me realize that I’m not invincible.

I’m fragile,

Easily stepped on.

So when you do leave,
I won’t have anything left,

Except the tears you cause.

The tears that make me eyes burn,

and the sadness that will make my heart swell up,

and my head hurt.

The sadness and vulnerability are palpable in this poem. Love can be, and should be, quite wonderful, but if it is not returned, then great sorrow and emotional pain can be the result. We all go through this at some time in our lives, but we usually come through it, and find the strength to love again. ~ Robert.
