Jericho SongA Poem by Nobody.I The entire world cowered when he spoke. Beer can in one hand, cigarette in the other. His eyes looked as if they outweighed the black hole behind them. His laughter was as scary as his angriest words. He said something about vultures and pigs, but I was trying to keep staring at my book. I could hear the sky crack through the gray stucco. I watched the pulsing years bleed into the ocean. I found myself walking up an off white stairwell; beer in one hand, cigarette in the other. He cowered when I entered the room. There was something familiar in his downcast stare. I laughed to lighten the mood, and he cowered more deeply. II Tides turn without my permission. I've gone from lamb to lion, with no warning bell. How do I melt stone? How do I trade rattle snake scales for angelic feathers? III I need a Jericho song to bring down this ancient wall. It’s too cold to stand on either side. I wonder if he knew; if he tried to change icy blood to warm honey. I guess I'll never understand. © 2011 Nobody. |
