A Visitor

A Visitor

A Poem by Senu Jayasinghe
"

Happiness is a visitor

"
Happiness is a visitor
Like a dew drop at dawn
Never lasts in the light of day

Sorrow on the other hand
Is an old friend
Forever comfortable in it’s presence
I’m at peace
Oh, how reliable it is

Happiness, like suddenly getting wings
Yet, you cannot fly forever
You have to land sometime
But me?
I fall…

Sadness, a bottomless dark pit
Happiness ends,
And into the depths of sorrow I fall
So you learn to live down there
With the monsters and the pain

You learn to breathe in the foggy smoke
You learn to look at the slivers of sunlight escaping the heavy dark clouds
You start to love the solitude
and the deafening silence
You keep moving

Early days, not knowing I could fall
I thought happiness was forever
So I fought, I begged, I bargained…

Later
I learned to expect it, accept it

Now,
I sit and wait…
Lately,
Sometimes,
I just jump in
all by myself…
