Harry's Herring.A Poem by Bryan SeftonA fish story.
Little Harry had a herring
He taught it how to swim But it had trouble breathing It really worried him He took it to the swimming baths He thought it might be fear But a rude attendant shouted "Get that thing out of here!" Harry said "get out of here? You know what you can do?" The attendant did indeed Grabbing Harry, out he threw He picked up the little herring Which had landed on the path Come on, old mate" he said "I'll teach you in the bath" He filled the bath with water It was twelve inches deep Lying calm and placid The fish seemed fast asleep He placed it in the water It sank right to the bottom So he got a little rubber ring And tied it on with cotton The herring it looked happy now Floating round and round Until our Harry realised It was upside down He dived in to rescue him It was a shallow dive He stood there dripping water Giving the kiss of life He took it to a pet shop To see if he'd help him out The man he took one look and then He gave Harry a clout "Don't you come in here again" . He said "Making fun of me Get your herring out of here Or I'll have it for my tea!" Harry picked the herring up And headed for the door He realised he knew someone Who would help for sure He went to his dad and asked him "Where do they come from?" . His dad said "why are you asking?" He said "I want to take him home" Dad told him "They live in the ocean But before you throw him in Do the fish a favour And take him out the tin" © 2022 Bryan Sefton |
