Bubbles For Spirit Levels.

Bubbles For Spirit Levels.

A Poem by Bryan Sefton
"

All those in the building trade know of the game of sending the novice to get a new bubble for the spirit level.

"
Your face had shown no laughter
After you gave me the order
Off I went like a whippet
Skipping on my errand
"The bubble in the spirit levels bust
Just nip down and get another"
No bother, off I went
The afternoon spent
Content on the river bank
Turning the bubble over in my hand
And the sun laughing his way across the sky
At my audacity

'That's not a bubble! That's a marble
And where the hell've you been all afternoon? '
I smiled, "The bubble's in the marble
They're a marvel the man said
The new unbreakable ones "
'And how am I to get the bubble
From the marble to the level?
I shrugged and kept my face dead pan
"You're the skilled man
I'm just the stupid apprentice"

Fits with the scout tradition of sending the new boy out to find 50 feet of shore-line, a tube of elbow grease, or a left-handed smoke shifter—a way of finding out if they could handle that sort of thing.

My rule for the boys in the troop was that they could pull any stunt, so long as the one whose tail was being pulled laughed when he learned it was a trick. And, we were not to embarrass the kid in front of strangers.

As a result, when a kid from another troop stopped by looking for shore-line, etc, I took him aside, broke the news, got him to smile about it, and then told him to take a wander, take a look at the other campsites, and when he returned, and they asked him if he was successful, his reply should be, "You didn't think I was dumb enough to fall for that, did you?"
