Baby Sitting My Granddaughter

Baby Sitting My Granddaughter

A Poem by Bryan Sefton

She plays in a world all her own
I hear every word she utters
I watch her confidently rise
As to dolly's pram she totters
She whispers to its painted face
And holds it closely in her arms
She tells it softly 'hush, hush now'
And the imagined crying calms
She radiates throughout the place
She's here and all the world is bliss
If all the beauty in the world
Were gathered in one room, it's this
She overwhelms me heart and soul
She so means everything to me
Because of her the reasons clear
How beautiful the world can be
Admirably, she plays her part
Her dolly picked up with such care
Then taken to her little cot
And so carefully placed in there
Her concentration so complete
Long eyelashes ring true blue eyes
Each little leg with dimpled knee
And every movement so precise
Was every day so carefree?
Was ever life for me so sweet?
And did a toy fill all my needs?
Did it make my world complete?
My Granddaughter would say, "indeed!"
She sits so pretty and demure
The wonder is she doesn't know
She smiles so sweet, so self assured
So happy in her baby mind
And so, for one small moment, mine.
