A Letter To The Government.

A Letter To The Government.

A Poem by Bryan Sefton
"

A plea for a better world.

"
Wise men, wise men, one and all
Who hold us up lest we should fall
Look at the starving of the world today
'Give us our daily bread' they pray
As we wonder what to have with steak.
Could it be this, my guiding sirs
That gives my world it's nightmare airs

Nice men, kind men, full of charms
Who welcome us with open arms
Observe the fleeing refugees
The sick and weary upon their knees
All searching for a place to stay
Tell me please, my learned Deans
It only exists within my dreams

Dear men, sweet men, full of grace
Sitting in your privileged place
Look at the man who daily fights
For what we call his basic rights
And is killed in the attempt
Tell me please, oh tell me do
That you can blot it from my mind too

Brave men, brave men, through and through
Full of courage, stout and true
What is it in what I say
That makes you look the other way?
Should I look that way too?

There is going to be much more poverty in this country as a result of global pressures and Ukraine. Poverty we haven't experienced for many years and by people who ARE in employment who don't earn enough with rising costs to pay their bills. The government needs to step up to the plate and find strategies even if they are outside their normal comfort zone. We need compassionate politics Bryan. A timely write. They can start by a windfall tax on energy suppliers who are minting it at moment while everyone else struggles. Good Monday morning to you.

Chris.

Chris, it could well be that, in a few months, we'll be looking back on these days as the good days... read more
