The day the earth stood still.

The day the earth stood still.

A Poem by Bryan Sefton
"

My wife's accident

"

You went full length in the road
The bang still echoes in the microwave
background of the universe
I still hear your muffled voice
'oh Bryan!' Your words still echo
Even though nearly eight years ago
The impact had booted you
Nearly six yards ahead
I smashed the window of his car
My priorities were first, to see him dead
And then to help you
Then, your 'Oh! Bryan'
Reached my ears
I took back my stick and ran to your side
'Relax, love. Keep still and relax'
That was the full total of my first aid
Given in the helplessness of my fear
You lay on your stomach
Your hands either side of your head
Helpless! Oh my God! Helpless!
That was me! My pity was for myself!
My hopeless, useless self
Me, on one knee, my hand upon her shoulder
My totally useless self
God was with us that day
He allowed you to stay
Both he and your fighting spirit
That would not give in
Though metal held you together.
