Umbrage

Umbrage

A Poem by VERONICA

She hangs a blank picture frame above her bed
It's broad, discolored, wooden
She found it on the side of the street in North Hollywood

She hangs a blank picture frame above her bed
So that she remembers to take the time
To see what kind of shadow she casts

She shifts her position so that her nose will show
To show off her gorgeous profile
To make her features invisible and all that's shown is chaotic Medusa hair

She studies her shadow morning and night
And at noon sometimes too
She studies it so much so that she didn't notice tiny things

The shadow became darker
The grey shadow started to show tint, eyes and other features
Her skin became more transparent

Then it stopped leaving the frame
Throughout the day her shadow was missing head and shoulders
Who sat in the picture frame, posing

She hangs a blank picture frame above her bed
