A Poem by sea lily

i lost it all
in early september.
and ruined the last memory
underneath
the trees.
groping on the sodden leaves.
saving us
from the police.
(who weren't the first to believe
the beautiful lies
from a child.
girls, make your eyes wide.)
so that left me
with one last boy
who--
i promised you
we would never get too friendly.
and you're the only one
who'll never get to kiss me--
said so yourself,
over our twin whiskies.
i am scared of me
and the cold white corners
the way i get
when left to thought
and extensive poetry.
and a great mind is a terrible thing to waste.
a great mind is a terrible thing.
a great mind is a terrible thing
when turned in on itself
in hate.
what a waste, waste, waste.

You reference to the time of year was very effective. A well written piece of reminiscence. AND, btw, great minds don't waste, they turn into wondering minds...but, seriously, this was a pleasure to read.

it's just a passing phase...and when everything is said and done, you'll still be a great mind...that's not such a terrible thing...but you must turn it in on yourself...that's the price of admission, i must admit
