beautiful, beautiful

beautiful, beautiful

A Poem by sea lily

i was all white innocence
drinking at the bar
my friends took photographs
wishing me luck
from afar.
she is sullen,
i wanted to make her smile
and in the dark of the place
i whispered it in her hair
she smiled then--
i looked to the ceiling
but she shook her head
and took my hands
drew me closer
into the dance.
'you're beautiful,
beautiful, she said
what are you doing with me?'
i shook my head fervently.
lighting up another cigarette
between kisses in the street.
and i have wanted you
for so long...
catching your shadowed eyes
in the middle of
your band's rock songs.
she's a dole baby,
no more than five pounds two pennies.
and i had money.
even if she wouldn't take it from me.
we fought then.
can't you see,
i want to get you home safe?
so i ran,
like i always do.
lost her in the building's grey hues.
plied the bouncers
with her name.
asked them if they'd seen--
beautiful,
beautiful,
what were you doing with me?

The loss expressed here is heavy enough to crush bone, yet the piece flows along as if it had wings.

beautiful, beautiful...in the sad and lost dimensions, of which you and Holly share mastery ...
