what's past

what's past

A Poem by sea lily

"it matters not," he says
"you are who you are
your stories, your scars,
past lovers
build up like sediment
to form what i love best...
and what you need to tell
i'd like to know."
when can you let go?
although you share most intimately
the past must tread delicately
around the new beloved.
and who else to tell?
yes, you are in my dreams
i can hear your voice in my sleep.
and i like the ruined lines
that are my own heart's to keep.
but your heart will resound,
with the command to lovers:
to look to each other
and ne'er to another.
the debris of the past
will wash away with the tide.
and you will see a new sun rise...
you will see your lover's dark eyes.
