i am beautiful now

maturing to womanhood,

finally

at the age of twenty three.

body ripe from my son,

jewel in my nose

images adorning my body.

when i was a girl

i was awkward 

and the wrong size

my face red from the drink

i drank

to feel good inside.

every movement a beg

somebody

please love me.

the goddess sent three angels

small, bright and mucky.

i give my life in service

to demands

and hugs and kisses.

clothes fit me now

they don't feel like costumes anymore

i wake with the sun

answer questions

like, 'where do babies come from?'

instead of begging

my heart is bursting

from this love.

grace, it permeates

is sometimes trying.

but bestowing upon us

this strange, unlikely beauty.

You know, like a lot of women out there, I too struggle with insecurity. The biggest being body image. My step-dad, although we a love/hate kind of relationship, there's one thing that he's told me numerous times. I used to always keep myself covered up because my skin is really pale. I do get darker in the Summer time but when I was much younger I was always ashamed to take off the layers and switch to summer clothing with short sleeve shirts and shorts because of my skin being so pale, I looked like a vampire due to being anemic. I had people pointing fingers at me and all that stuff. It really made me just more insecure and uncomfortable. My step-dad would always tell me every time I'd bring up how I look like a ghost, a vampire, transparent and all that, he'd always say, "Stop saying such things about yourself! You have beautiful milky white skin!" You don't realize the power positive words can have over you until you begin to accept them. Unfortunately the same can happen with negative words. You have a very powerful and beautiful piece here.
