A Child's Imagination

A Child's Imagination

A Poem by Miss Shea

“Yo-ho, yo-ho, it’s a pirate’s life for me,”

This is how it is always meant to be

Living free and open, no boundaries to be crossed

Never a place to find that they’d be truly lost

Making their way through life, living day by bay

Always making jokes, always trying to play

They aren’t destined to be locked up tight

Lest it take away their god-given right

Traveling around to wonderful lands

Always making sure they issued the commands

Waging wars way out at sea

Winning battles and walking free

Stealing the loot or fighting off danger

Forgetting the time as they played a stranger

These are the times the children miss most

It seemed so real to them, almost

When time has passed and they have grown

They forget about fantasy and face reality alone

All the games and childish singing

The guns as they fire, the bells loudly ringing

But when they close their eyes, they can remember the games

No matter how boring, no matter how lame

But, then they come to their sense and shake away those thoughts

Thinking of them as childish faults

Forgetting again how the games made them feel

And focusing on what they know is real
