Shes White, Hes Brown.Wait, what are you?

Shes White, Hes Brown.Wait, what are you?

A Poem by Nicole Pilar
"

You don't always want to own up to what you are...but when you do sometimes the hardest evidence against you is the face you'll find in the mirror...

"
Big, Colorful Signs
Dressed in red, white, black, and brown
Announcing who you are
What you are

Water is thicker than blood
It doesnt matter what heritage can tell you
Only what eyes can tell you
And so I belong to no one
No one really wants me

My family line has now missed a beat
A step in the dance is misplaced
The dancers crash
No longer at peace
I have stopped the record

Now I am a traitor to my race
Because I do not carry their sign
To assign myself as one of them
Only earns me looks
Of hate
Of skeptic
Of coldness

Only earns me proof
That I will never be one of them
Not one of any of them
I have no us to turn to
In everyones eyes
My us does not exist

Family lines are swept away
History?
What history?
Why would a girl like me need a history?

A culture
A story
A finishing piece to my puzzle

I am simply unfinished
My sign
Not Painted
My dance
Unspoken For
My story
Not Written
My puzzle
Tucked away in a forgotten corner
Still in its box
Because I could never find quite the right piece.

You say, ''Now I am a traitor to my race

Because I do not carry their 'sign'

To assign myself as one of them.''

I say, ''You are a credit to the race that counts. The human race.''

You have my vote.
