A Poem by Mason Vail
"

haiku string - mights as well roll with it

"

log in to read and...
hey! where have my poems gone?
try not to panic

spontaneous art
reproducibility
might be a problem

must not give up hope
surely it's nothing major
click obsessively

several hours have passed
all the writings still missing
where have they all gone?

SQL errors
where once there were links to art
guess I'll have to work

log in once again
checking over and over
still nothing changing

stupid database...
creativity handcuffed
someone should fix it

why am I still here?
apparently addicted
might have to seek help

We won't stand for this!
We demand better service!
Okay, so it's free...

my haiku string grows
as the hourglass sands run
onto the server

Oh, Hallelujah!
my precious poems are back
all is forgiven

:)

Dear Mason,

A very good poem. And one that I know will connect with lots of people on WC. But now the scolding!

You're a computer scientist! Where was your backup? Shame! Shame! Shame!

Still, I know this affected everyone and lots of hearts were in their throats. So please, everyone, back up all your stuff. You don't want to lose your writing.

Some years ago I lost a hard disk with volumes of material I needed for work. It affected everything I did for over a year. But these days there is a simple $100 solution: an external USB hardrive that will automatically mirror and archive your data. And please write your poems on your own computer first so you have a copy. Then transfer them to WC. It is slightly more work, but never again will your heart be in your throat. And even if your main hard drive goes down, there is that backup!

Oh, what is that I hear in the background? Ah, it is the sound of the external disk backing up my stuff. Sigh! So soothing!

Best regards,

Rick

LOL Hey i think that was planned as some kind of joke!
I wasn't laughin!!! I did around the third hour though to be honest.
You told the truth i bet everyone was doing the exact same thing.
And so many people were on that a new comer could'nt tell if it was
a bad day or not! This is such a great recap! I like how you combined the
emotions we went through an packed them into this poem. Very Great!!!
Now everyone will back their writing up! Awesome Poem!

To be slightly more specific, numbers 2 and 9 are the best of the bunch. "reproducibility might be a problem" is perfectly succint and symmetrical. "Okay, so it's free" captures our online society.

Okay, these were entertaining. And with flashes of brilliance - maybe in your future there exists a work titled "A Day In My Life" chronicling, well, a day in your life, composed solely of haikus ... dozens and dozens and dozens of them strung together? Just a humble idea.

Very amusing-

I've been through the ringer many a times with glitches similar to this on the admin end and believe me it's quite nerve racking on that end as well. All ended well- It did strike me odd that it hit on the 13th and was fixed on the 14th- It could have been one hell of a Friday the 13th prank-but I'm a very cynical guy

good job on placing your thoughts concerning the situation in a well worded string.
