Our Version of Love

Our Version of Love

A Poem by Solace

What is love?

A question I often hear from my teachers and elders,

and every time I would think of the same answer.

Love is the affection one has for their partner,

it is in the effort one gives to care for-

and completely understand the other.

But as I grew older and wiser,

my definition of love became clearer.

Love is more than how it is defined in textbooks and dictionaries.

Love is in the warmth of your kisses on my forehead as I wake.

Love is in the smell of the breakfast that we prepare together.

Love is in our soaking wet clothes as we splashed water while washing dishes together.

Love is in your sweater you lent me during our walk in the chilly park.

Love is in the seconds spent in each other's company just doing nothing.

Love is in the minutes I spend worrying for my partner's safety and well-being.

Love is in the hours spent on our long drives going home while I fall asleep at times.

Love is in your wide and bright smile as you talk about every little thing.

Love is in your eyes that sparkle with joy when you talk about your family and friends.

Love is in your breath that touches my neck as we cuddle in our messy bed.

As time goes on, I have also learned that there are many lows when it comes to love.

Love really is one heck of a roller-coaster ride.

Love is in the crippling silence that fills our home during our cold wars.

Love is in the invisible wall that divided our bed as we slept with our backs facing each other.

Love is in the pain we both shared in the toughest battles of our lives.

Love is in the most difficult sacrifices we had to make for each other’s sake.

Love is in the tears that formed when you told me you don’t love me anymore which we both know is a lie.

Imperfect yet perfect.

That is the love that I found in you.
