Road Kill

Road Kill

A Poem by Brendan McCallum

.

While both gradient and curve

gave me a ring-side seat I observed

him 'in and out' the traffic as I neared,

him - lunching on a less fortunate,

too cheeky for words; he left it

later and later between beakfulls

and cars, a careless twist of black 'n' white

and rat................

closer than close, I eased off my throttle

affording him a silly second...

he upped and awayed too late

and got smashed in lane two,

such a deadly thud ...

I  watched the last of him

in my rear view mirror,

A carnival of feathers.

I see 'him' perfectly drawn in his foible and fatality. Perfect.

Kind thanks indeed, I do like it when my creations work with the visual, Bren
wow, can i relate to this...southern illinois is like the hub of roadkill...and those crows and turkey vultures are all over the roads dining from the buffet...

and sometimes they get popped too...

very descriptive.
and a real talent to be able to make roadkill poetic.

' A carnival of feathers.'

Oh my... a sight too often seen in this rural area.. and one i so hate!

However, your writing smoothly, cleverly tells the tale of a character who - in his carefree, greedy and unaware way, doesn't know his fate. But, you've created a death scene with poetic verity (think that's what I mean). Fine writing.

sad, I can imagine that in humanities progress, many sacrifices, habitat and innocences lost. I can't help but imagine that our life here on earth is a matter of survival of the fittest - to avoid or fight back or to ignore or to simply mover forward... death is much everywhere... like the sayings says: its a hard life. very expressive piece.
