Staring At The Empty Chairs

Staring At The Empty Chairs

A Poem by Savannah Bly

Staring At The Empty Chairs

I sit here
At the table
Where friends once gathered
But I am alone
Staring at the empty chairs
Why do the chairs feel empty
Like they can hold my thoughts
But choose to remain vacant
As if I am not there
To think
Or be
As if nothing ever existed here
Nothing ever happened
Not that we were never here
But we never existed ourselves
It's all empty
Dead silent
Only space exists
Empty space
From empty chairs

You really blow. You really did this in real time. I don't mean blow in a bad way. That is very impressive, but I think somebody shaded you and wrote in non-real time or this would have won. Excellent write. Keep it up. People don't get how hard it is to write in real time.

I find myself asking why in these times... I never find a definitive answer.
Good capture of thought.

Thank you so much for your kind words!
I like the use of the empty chair. Gave vision and purpose to the poem. Life changes and one day we remember we had more and we lost the good places. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.

You are welcome.
Excellent existential piece, made me think of "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" from Les Miserables (the Broadway Musical). Minimal yet profound with a haunting hint of sadness. I would offer some constructive criticism if I had any to offer, but I think this piece stands as is. Well done!
