Processing betrayal

Processing betrayal

A Poem by Swoo

The man I knew died yesterday
And I feel sad
The man I knew and loved
And called my own
The man I made room for
In my home
The man I opened my heart to
But he didn’t die
He didn’t die, he just left
But it is like he has died
Because he just left
The man I don’t know has
Moved to lowestoft
The man I don’t know has gone
A life I knew nothing of
The man I don’t know needs to collect
The things he owns
So that I can mourn
For the man I knew
Who died yesterday

Separation isn't physical death but the sense of loss can be just as painful. Since the title mentions betrayal, we may assume the man's departure was for another woman. The line "A life I knew nothing of" seems to confirm it. The fact that he needs to collect his possessions seems to say it's all over. A painful read, this one, but an accurate picture of the effects of such a situation.
