Should've Known

Should've Known

A Poem by Sarahthirk

Should've Known

Verse:
Broken pieces of our love scattered all around
All of our memories are lost but cant be found
You said that you would keep me safe and sound
Then you went and crushed everything we had to the ground

Our song came on the radio at 3:28 today
I had to pull over, the tears wouldn't go away
You left me with all these questions, yet so little to say
And I still feel the smell of your hair every day

Pre-Chorus:
So I'll lie to myself, I'll say I'm better off
Yet I know I still fell, and I can't even crawl

Chorus:
Now I have nothing but a bitter taste in my mouth
And your healing hands aren't here to hold me
I should've known that we were heading south
Always be careful, that's what mama told me
All our pictures are already in the fire
You burned me, so I burned them
You used to be the one I admired
So now I'll put your sweatshirt on a hanger
And never bring it down
My life is now in mortal danger,
I should've known
'Cause the pain ain't a stranger

Verse:
My eyes won't dare to take a glance at yours
You locked my heart behind heavy French doors
Your words cut across the my heart line like it was a dotted line
Guess I was a fool for expecting more

There's no air around me, impossible to breathe
Constant reminders of you and what you did to me
Trapped inside my own mind, can't get free
Can't hear no sounds, can't even see

Pre-Chorus:
So I'll let myself think I didn't need you
I once did, you see, and now that we're through

Chorus:
Now I have nothing but a bitter taste in my mouth
And your healing hands aren't here to hold me
I should've known that we were heading south
Always be careful, that's what mama told me
All our pictures are already in the fire
You burned me, so I burned them
You used to be the one I admired
So now I'll put your sweatshirt on a hanger
And never bring it down
My life is now in mortal danger,
I should've known
'Cause the pain ain't a stranger

Bridge:
I should've known that there's always a calm before the storm
I should've known before matches burn, they don't get warm
You should've known that not everyone's as strong as superman
You should've known I believed you when you pulled me in to dance

Chorus:
Now I have nothing but a bitter taste in my mouth
And your healing hands aren't here to hold me
I should've known that we were heading south
Always be careful, that's what mama told me
All our pictures are already in the fire
You burned me, so I burned them
You used to be the one I admired
So now I'll put your sweatshirt on a hanger
And never bring it down
My life is now in mortal danger,
I should've known
'Cause the pain ain't a stranger

Outro:
Oh no, the pain ain't a stranger
I should've known
