Ch.1: AmnesiaA Chapter by Sarah BarnettThe first chapter of the book, New. Elaine awakes to find herself in an odd place.New Ch.1: Amnesia I woke up. That’s all I really remember. I’m not sure what happened to me before I woke up, all I knew was that I was waking up now in a strange room. I looked up at the white ceiling and in my peripheral I could tell that all the walls were white as well. I moved my eyebrows together in confusion, how did I get here? Was it a hospital? It sure smelled like a hospital, clean and smelling like disinfectant. I sat up slowly, my head spinning as I did so and looked around the room. It was almost like a cell: one toilet a sink and the bed I was laying on. When I looked to my left, opposite of the wall the bed was against, I noticed an I.V pole with a bag hanging off of it. The tube ran down and ended up in the crook of my elbow. I stared at the I.V for a minute, confused. Was I sick? I moved the light cover that was over me to see that I was in a hospital gown, but my pale legs had some bruises. Maybe I had gotten hurt and this WAS a hospital. I swung my leg over the bed slowly and stood up, the white tile cold on my bare feet. I turned towards the wall that was supposed to hold the door, but I froze upon finding something else there. It was a wall of mirror, a whole wall, and it looked like a two way mirror. That was very odd. Taking a hold of the I.V pole I made my way towards the mirrored wall. Upon closer inspection the mirror itself was even weirder. It seemed to ripple, like water, yet it looked solid. I raised my hand to touch it but paused as my hand came close to it, I could feel the cold radiating off of it. Funny thing was, the room I was in, it wasn’t cold. I placed my palm flat against the mirrored wall and my eyes widened. Even though it felt solid, it rippled under my touch like a liquid. Then I began to think, if this was a two way mirror, couldn’t there be someone on the other side? I felt my stomach rumble and I frowned at my reflection. I was usually pale, but I seemed to be almost ghostly now. My blue eyes stood out greatly with all the white around me and my dusty brown hair didn’t help any with how it fell into my face. It’d be worth trying, I thought to myself, if someone was beyond the wall maybe they could help and if there wasn’t, well nothing would happen. I licked my dry lips before speaking, “Hello? I-if there is anyone out there, I’m kind of hungry and some clothes would be nice.” I was silent for a moment before laughing to myself. There was probably no one out there in the first place. I turned and began to walk back to my bed, which was more like a hospital bed than a real bed. I sat down on it and sighed tiredly. Why was I here? I closed my eyes and tried to remember anything before I woke up, but it hurt to do so and I stopped. There was a sound like two automatic doors opening and I turned towards the mirrored wall in time to see them slide open as such. With curious eyes I watched the doctor walk in. I assumed he was a doctor because of the white coat that he wore. I looked at him for awhile for he was different looking: his eyes were an unusual apple green and his hair was blond almost white in color and his skin was on the tanned side. He held a clip board in his hand and looked at it briefly before looking back at me. “Your name is Eliane correct?” He questioned. I nodded, “Yes, are you a doctor?” He laughed, a beautiful smile forming on his face, “Your very clever, yes I am. I am also one of few translators on this ship. I’m afraid the scientists didn’t understand what you said earlier. Could you repeat what you said to them for me?” I blushed a little bit as he turned his attention on me. “I-I said that I was hungry and would like some clothes to wear.” “Oh, well that can be arranged.” He stated while clicking his pen and writing something down on the clip board. “You said we were on a ship, did you mean like a boat or like a…” I trailed off hoping he would understand. “It’s a space ship.” He looked up from his clip board with a concerned face. “Do you not remember what happened before you woke up?” I shook my head, “I don’t.” “That’s not good.” He stated before writing down something else. “I’ll be back with some clothes and food. Then we can talk about what happened.” “Wait,” I said before the doctor could leave, “What is your name?” He turned to face me from where he stood by the mirrored wall. “My name is Dr. Vial. It should be easy enough to remember.” I nodded and watched as the doctor left, the wall parting like two automatic doors before closing again. It wasn’t like a normal door, you couldn’t tell where it began once it was closed. I frowned as I looked down at my feet. We were in a space ship? But how could that be? The only space ship I knew of was on Star Trek and that was just a TV show. I pulled my legs up on the be and began to inspect the bruises there. Where had I got them? I turned to look at my arms which had a few bruises near my shoulders. I looked around shyly before I pulled at my top to looked down at myself. I frowned at the scratches I saw there. Obviously something had happened to me. I heard the doors open again and I let out a shocked squeak before covering myself. The doctor didn’t seem to notice as he placed food on a tray near my bed. He also placed some clothes on the bed. “I need you to strip for me.” He stated professionally. I nodded and stood before taking off my hospital gown. The doctor then approched me and looked at my back. “What happened to me?” “We are not really sure at the moment.” He stated as he walked around to place his hands on my ribs. I winced and he stopped. “I know you have a few bruised ribs and some nasty cuts on your back, but other than that you are fine.” “That’s a good thing right?” I asked as he opened a vial of green gel and began placing it on my back. “Of course it’s a good thing, but its also an odd thing. We rescued you from a burning building, yet you have no burns, only cuts and bruises.” He moved back to stand in front of me and capped the vial. “You may put on your clothes now.” I didn’t need to be told twice, I was already embarrassed with having to stand naked in front of a doctor and who knows how many other scientists on the other side of the door. I quickly put on the red shirt he gave me along with the sweat pants. The shirt was a little large, hanging off my small figure, but the pants fit perfectly. “I picked that shirt so that it wouldn’t bother the wounds on your back.” Dr. Vial said after I was done dressing. I walked over to the bed and sat down feeling a little tiered. I pulled the tray towards me and began to eat the soup provided for me. “Will you tell me how I ended up on this ship?” Dr. Vial nodded and took a seat next to me. “We are what you would call, ‘aliens’, we are from a different planet. We came to Earth in hopes of finding new life, nothing more or less. When we did land on Earth we were saddened to find it almost void of life.” I frowned at this and took a drink of the sweetest water I had ever tasted. “So what did you do?” “We took you guys in. Like you, some of the other injured are in this hospital wing. The scientists are here to take notes since we are not familiar with your race, though our doctors have it a little easier since we were on the same level in that area of expertise.” “That’s interesting.” I said before taking another sip of the soup. It was good, for hospital food. “Yes, but the sad thing is, you and one other are the only two humans who act civilized. All the others are very angry and wont let us come near them.” I frowned, “What did you with them?” Dr. Vial frowned, “The only thing we could do, we put them in a simulation room. It simulates Earth and the homes there. It makes them feel as if nothing has changed. We don’t interfere with them unless it is absolutely necessary.” “That’s sad.” I said putting down my spoon. I couldn’t eat any more, my stomach was full and I felt very tiered. I laid down on the bed and Dr. Vial got up and put the light cover over me. “Thank you.” I said as I began to drift off. “We’ll talk more tomorrow.” He said in a light tone as he brushed my hair out of my face. My eyes were getting heavy and all I could do was smile before I fell into the darkness of sleep. © 2010 Sarah BarnettAuthor's Note
