Ch.2: Relations with a Convict

Anthony drove Sarah to the apartment, and the whole drive there neither of them spoke making an uncomfortable silence. Once the car stopped they both got out and walked up to the apartment. Anthony opened the door and let Sarah in first before letting himself inside. As he put up his coat and hat, he over heard Sarah and Detective Moore.

“Hey old man!” Sarah said happily as she walked over and placed a hand on Moore’s shoulder. Anthony walked in and saw this, confused as to how Sarah knew the Detective so well.

“Hello, Sarah it’s good to see you, but must I remind you that we are of the same age?” He asked as he looked away from his chess game to look at her.

Sarah grinned, “No, but your hair is white, therefore you are old.” She chuckled which made Moore smile. That in it self was a big accomplishment, since the Detective never showed emotion.

Anthony was surprised at all of this. How could Sarah make him smile like that? Anthony joined them in the living room. “Do you two know each other?”

Sarah sat across from Moore as they started a new chess game together. “Kaden and I used to go to school together.” She said moving a chess piece.

“Please don’t use my first name.” Said Moore as he calculated his move.

“Fine, old man. Renee and Moore were buddies and I was a loner at the time. They were the only people who bothered to try and talk to me.”

Anthony sat on the chair that faced the two that Moore and Sarah where sitting on. “Why didn’t I know?” He whispered in question.

Sarah’s gaze became serious as Moore started to win. “Probably the same reason I didn’t know Renee had a son, lack of communication.” She made her move and it was Moore’s turn once again. “So about the case…” Sarah hinted as Moore took another of her chess pieces.

“Yes, the reason you’re here.” Moore watched as Sarah calculated her own move. “As I am sure you know, there has been a series of arson’s committed that all include homes burning down. The firemen said there was no evidence of accelerant or even a starting point of the fire. It was like it just suddenly combusted into flame.”

Sarah looked up, after moving her piece, and stared at Moore as if she realized something, “Do you have photo’s?”

Moore nodded and continued, “Soon the arson’s escalated to murders. We suspect that its all one person.” Moore moved his chess piece before handing Sarah a photo. “I suspect it’s this girl.”

Sarah took the photo and examined the green eyed, freckled, red head in the photo. “You think she is able to control fire?”

Anthony’s eyes widened at the idea, and the fact that Sarah had moved one of Moore’s pieces without touching it.

“You shouldn’t cheat.” Moore said as he moved his piece back. “But yes, your correct. That is where you come in to play. I’ve told the authorities to tell the public that you have escaped. Since the girl targets criminals, you will be the perfect bait. One of the teachers at her school is on hospital leave, I want you to fill in for her.”

“Sounds fun.” She said sarcastically, “When do I start?”

Moore moved his last piece and said, “Check Mate.” Before answering, “In three days, you will head over to the high school.”

Sarah put down the girls photo, “I would like to see your ‘evidence’ before we start. I want to know what you know.”

Moore nodded, “Very well, Anthony will show you what I have on my computers.”

After showing Sarah all the evidence and notes Moore had taken, Anthony walked her to her room. “If you need anything, my room is across the hall and Moore is…Well he never sleeps.”

“Still has his insomnia does he?” She asked as she walked in and sat on her bed.

“Still? How long has he had it?” Anthony asked while walking into the room with her but staying a  good distance away.

“Ever since I can remember knowing him, really. Sometimes he would catch a few minutes of sleep at lunch  or in class, but that was all.” She looked at Anthony questionably, “Did your mother not tell you anything about her past?”

Anthony frowned, “She didn’t have the chance. Good night.” He stated, obviously upset, before leaving.

Sarah laid back non the bed and a plan developed slowly in her mischievous head.

Anthony tried not to slam the his door as he entered his room. How dare she assume that his mother would hide something from him? He took off his shirt and jeans before getting into his green pajama bottoms. His mother died when he was 13 and he had witnessed her death as well. Anthony got on the bed and under the covers, Sarah probably meant no harm in her words, but he went to sleep fairly upset by them.

In the middle of the night, Sarah made her way into Anthony’s room. She made no sound as she walked over to his bedside. Anthony disserved to know more about his loving mother, and Sarah had the unknown ability to share or protect precious memories. Placing a finger on his forehead she inserted a memory of hers into his head so it would play out in his dreams. With a smirk, she pulled away and left him to dream.

Anthony sat in a crowded school cafeteria. He didn’t recognize the school, and then he did, it was an odd feeling. He watched as two people approched him and then his point of view switched. Now he was watching a young brown haired Sarah sitting where he had been, as two other people approched her.

Emotion caught in his throat as he recognized his mother: She looked younger, her long blond hair curled wildly, and her green eyes were as lovely as they had been when she was alive, she was younger but that was the only difference to Anthony. Next to his mother was a brown haired boy with dark green eyes, he was shorter than both girls, Anthony couldn’t place it, but he recognized the boy as well.

“Hi, my name is Renee and this is my friend Kaden. We were wondering if we could sit by you, Sarah?” Anthony’s mother asked as she nervously played with her long blond hair.

“So, Miss. Goody-two-shoes and Professor-know-it-all want to sit with little old me?”
Sarah asked meanly before smiling, “Sounds nice.”

Anthony walked closer as the group settled down in a small triangle at the tables, Sarah on one side, while his mom and the other boy sat on the other side.

“Kaden Moore, right?” Sarah asked as their friendship began, “ I heard you fell asleep in class.”

Anthony turned to look at the teen detective with awe, his hair really did turn white! Kaden frowned, “Yes, it seems that I’m not so good at sleeping now and days.”

“I also heard that you and Renee are ‘together’.”

Both Renee and Kaden blushed, but Renee spoke out, “Heaven’s no, I have a boyfriend!” She turned and pointed behind her, “He is over there.”

Anthony woke up to his alarm clock going off. He mumbled something as he sat up and shut it off. He had forgotten to turn it off last night. He sat back non his bed and ran a hand through his messy hair. He never had a dream like that before, was it because of what Sarah had said last night?

There was a soft knock on his bedroom door before Moore entered the room. “Are you alright, Anthony?” Moore asked as he walked into his room.

Anthony looked at him questionably, “How did you now something was wrong?”

Moore sat down by Anthony on the bed, “Your alarm clock, if you weren’t troubled it wouldn’t have gone off.”

Anthony sighed. “Sarah said something that made me upset last night, then I had this crazy dream…”

“A dream about what, exactly?” Moore seemed interested which meant something was churning in his head.

“It was about Sarah, Mom, and You and when you guys first met. You even had brown hair.”

Moore’s eyes widened just a fraction, “ I see, when did you wake up in this dream?”
“When mom pointed to her boyfriend, I didn’t get to see who it was.”

Moore nodded, “I see. I will leave you to yourself then.”

Anthony watched as Moore left the room silently. What had that been about? He shook it off and go out of bed to get dressed for the day.

                       * * *

Moore walked into Sarah’s room and saw her laying asleep in her bed. Walking over to her bed, and sitting on the edge, Moore put his hand on her shoulder and shook her lightly to wake her.

She opened her eyes tiredly and looked over her shoulder at him, before sitting up and turning towards him. Moore stared at her intently, “What did you do?”

She yawned and ran a hand through her messy blue-brown hair, before her eyes focused back on Moore. “I was only trying to help the boy.”

“By doing what?” He asked slightly curious.

Sarah grinned tiredly and leaned forward towards the detective, “By showing him Renee through my own memories. Is that so bad?”

Moore frowned as Sarah’s hand came to settle on top of his own. “I could be, he witnessed Renee’s death.”

Sarah sighed and moved her hand way from Moore’s, “I’ll be careful then, but he has the right to know.”

Moore nodded and left the room without another word.
