Birthday candles

Birthday candles

A Poem by Sarah McKeever Hitt

Do you think of me
Because somedays I can’t stop thinking of you
I don’t tell anyone
They wouldn’t understand
They can’t figure out why I don’t read you for what you are
Not good enough for me.
Well maybe you aren’t good enough for me
Maybe I am a million steps above you
But I am not convinced
Only a fool would ignore a word of warning
Especially when it comes from the mouth of the Devil
I have never claimed to be wise
Especially in matters of you.
The truth is I have loved you longer than I wanted to
That includes today.
I see your wishes for the future.
I hope they burn to the ground
Not out of spite
I can’t make my own birthday candle wishes
I haven’t forgotten my old ones.
