But I couldn't

But I couldn't

A Poem by Sarah McKeever Hitt

The door clicked behind you
"breathe in breathe out"
as I held onto my sanity
you took even that from me.
My trembling hands told on me
standing in front of you
"breathe in breathe out"
but I couldn't.

This is you
standing and waiting for me.

How could I take my eyes off of you
"center and be calm"
with that confident glare
challenging me to live up to my words
your eyes were unclear but hands true
reaching for my shoulder and pulling me in
"center and be calm"
but i couldn't

This is me
standing and waiting for you.
