Woolf

Woolf

A Poem by Sarah Conder
"

Inspired by Virginia Woolf.

"

The cool, clear water greeted your aged frame,

Enveloping you in its silken embrace.

The pockets of your pea-green overcoat, lined with stones,

Weighed down your wearied form,

Stealing you away from the torment of your

Darkened thoughts; nefarious whispers

You could no longer bear to hear.

In those final, breathless moments, did you reflect on the

Love bestowed upon you?

Did you return to those tranquil days beneath the

Golden apples trees where you were once so content?

Or did you slip away as peacefully as the newly melted snow,

Succumbing to the gentle lull of the water’s ebb and flow

To send you on your eternal slumber?

While all around, the world you left behind

Continued to rage and tremble in its

Unrelenting struggle for victory;

Razing your home, the very fragments of your existence,

To the ground.

And yet, as you floated silently along your watery bed,

Seaward-bound,

The crocus and the daffodil still bloomed

In the soft radiance of the April sunshine.
