Pumpkin Eater

A short story about a little boy and girl who grew up together as best friends. I'm experimenting with my writing so I tried to write this short story.

"1, 2, 3, 4! I declare a thumb war!"
His thumb went on top of hers like it did every time they played.
"You cheated," Sophie yelled.
"No, I didn't!"
"Yes, you did! You always win 'cause you always cheat! It's no fair!"
"Sophie, I didn't cheat! I never cheated...you're just a sore loser."
"Rematch!"
"You're on!"
This is how they spent their childhood days. Joey and Sophie were best friends.
The buttons on the controller clicked and the fake gunshots from the screen sounded.
"Ha! I killed you," Joey said.
"You're such a cheater!"
"Am not! You're just a sore loser."
This was how they spent their teenage days. They were the closest people anyone ever knew.
The music played loudly and Joey and Sophie were now at the same college and went to a party together.
"Kiss! Kiss! Kiss," their friends yelled. And they did. It was at that moment, after 19 years of knowing each other, 19 years of being best friends, that Sophie and Joey knew they loved each other.
"So, are we together," Joey asked, shyly looking down at his feet.
"Only if you want to be," Sophie answered.
"Then you're my girlfriend."
"Good."
They held hands and at the end of the night went their separate ways.
"He cheated on you," Sophie's friend said.
At first she didn't believe her but she asked Joey and he told her the truth. Although it crushed Sophie, she still loved him and said it was alright. That night they both went home seemingly happy.
The tires screeched, the glass shattered and the metal clanged...
The organ played and then the priest began to speak while family and friends were in tears.
"Why did it have to be Joey," Sophie's mother asked, "why him?"
To this Sophie answered " 'cause this time he cheated at the wrong game. It's not fair! He always cheats! He knows I'm a sore loser!"
