Names

Names

A Poem by SarahK
"

A poem about bullying

"
"Sticks and stones
May break my bones,
But names will never hurt me"
What a lie that is
Who ever thought that
Broken bones couldn't
Hurt just as badly?
Surely they were the ones
Calling the people like me
Every name you could think of
They had it good
And didn't think anyone else
Could have it any worse than they did
But, oh, the people like you and I did
At least broken bones heal
While the words we hear will always be there
Even after the pain is gone
the scar will still remain
Until the day all we are,
are just remains
And hardly a memory of us remain
'cause the names we were called
Were in the past
And the people who called us them never looked back
Because they thought that names could never hurt us
And while they were all cozy and asleep in bed
We were the ones awake looking for relief
So we let our blood run from our scars
And by doing so created more scars
And then we were mocked again and again
And there you go, more scars
Get the picture?
Do I need to literally paint you a picture?
'Cause all we see are pictures
Pictures of the past
And pictures of our scars
Pictures of the pain
But on the outside we choose to stay strong
'Cause we think hiding is the only way to be strong
While you think that weights make you strong
But the definition of strength comes from within
Not just what you people do in the gym
So on our faces we will show you a grin
Smile and bat our eyes
Put on lots of makeup to help our disguise
And we ask you now
"Are we pretty yet?"
"Do you like us yet?"
And what we do is never good enough
So we continually keep trying
And we'll never stop trying
'cause we think trying makes you strong
And it's enough to get along
And while the people in your clique get along
All of us who were mocked get along
It's our own clique
Is this starting to click?
Do I need a remote to click and rewind?
'Cause in our minds all we do is rewind
"Sticks and stones
May break my bones
But names will never hurt me"
Well they hurt me
And I know I'm not the only one
I am not alone
And you are not the only one
We know pain
And the pain is worse than your pain
'Cause this pain isn't ordinary pain
It's practically a death sentence.
