Zeke and Zane

Zeke and Zane

A Screenplay by Sarah Niver

EXT. CEMETRAY - DAY

ZANE, a young man dressed in a black tuxedo, holding a single rose, is walking through the cemetary.

ZANE(V.O.):

"Everything's going to be okay. You're going to pull through, and pull through strong." That's what they all say.

He arrives to a specific grave and tosses the rose onto the grave.

ZANE(V.O):

But they're wrong. And I think they know that.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

ZANE is adjusting his tux, his tie, and his gun(whatever it takes to prepare a gun).

ZANE(VO):

Nothing will be okay. Not until he's dead. That man, no, that Satan! The world should be well rid of him. But it won't be, unless I step in. Intervene in fate, for the good of all things proclaimed to be good in this life.

EXT. ZEKE'S BACKYARD - NIGHT

ZANE is sneaking around, either tranquilizing or knocking out all of the guards silently. Before entering the house, he dials 911 on his cellphone, and just leaves it outside.

INT. ZEKE'S HOUSE - NIGHT

He stalks around the house, until he finds ZEKE, another young man, sitting in a chair reading the newspaper.

ZANE(VO):

Zeke and I, we were partners. Literally, partners in crime. But that ended when I realized how cruel this brute was.

ZANE points his gun at ZEKE'S face.

ZANE:

(shouting)

Why, Zeke? Tell me why!

ZEKE:

Your soft heart was holding me back, Zane.

ZANE:

Why her? Why not me?! Why kill her?!

ZEKE:

I'm giving you a second chance. With her gone, nothing will stop you. Nothing will stop us! Don't you see? You're free!

ZANE:

Shut up!

ZANE punches ZEKE in the face.

(cont'd)

You b*****d.

ZANE looks away just for a second, but it is long enough for ZEKE to push away ZANE's gun and pull out his own and point it at ZANE. ZANE reacts and points his gun back at ZEKE. A tense moment passes with nothing happening. ZEKE smirks.

ZEKE:

While we're just here, you want a drink?

ZANE in not entertained at ZEKE's little joke.

ZANE:

I'm not leaving here until you're dead.

ZEKE:

Ahh see, it seems we're in a bit of a game. I want you dead, you want me dead. And neither of us wants to die in the process. Who will win, I wonder?

ZANE:

I didn't say I wouldn't die. I only said I want you dead.

ZEKE:

Ohh, quite the hero, ready to make the ultimate sacrifice to see justice through. How ironic of you.

ZANE pushes his gun harder against ZEKE's head.

ZANE:

Shut up!

ZEKE:

You may disown me from your heart, but we will always be brothers in blood.

ZANE:

We are not brothers. Brothers don't do this.

ZEKE:

Yet, here we are. A pitiful ending, isn't it?

ZANE doesn't respond, and after a moment, ZEKE lowers his weapon and sits in his seat.

ZEKE:

I'm not the traitor here, and you know that.

There is a tense stare-down, and Zeke takes advatage of this moment to trip ZANE, which knocks the gun out of ZANE's hand. ZEKE points his gun at ZANE once more.

ZEKE:

(sincerely apologetic)

Sorry, brother. It's nothing personal, just business.

In the near distance, sirens go off and lights flash. ZEKE angriliy turns on ZANE.

ZEKE:

You!

And with that, he pulls the trigger, and ZANE falls dead.

ZANE(VO):

I lived for her and died for her. There was nothing in life or death that I came to regret because it led me to her.

Everything is in slow motion. ZEKE tries to run, but the cops barge in.

Everything turns black, and only sound can be heard by the audience.

COP#1:

Sir! Get on your knees and put your hands above your head!

COP#2:

Sir! Put your weapon down! Sir please--

COP#1:

He's raising his gun!---

Gunfire ensues and abruptly stops.

COP#2:

Suspect is down.

Author's Note

Sarah Niver
I will say I do not like the beginning, Zane's dialogue, I mean. It needs work so I would prefer no critique in that area. This is just a rough draft, so leave it alone for a while. Thanks for reading though.
