When Insomnia Gets the Best of you’

Sleep. How long it’d been since you slept last. Well, had a sound sleep that is. Insomnia reeks. You finally agree now. It’s 2am and you’re still up. You’re bored. Suddenly facebook seems so monotonous. You’re tired of it. That’s why you find yourself awake after midnight doing homework. You never thought that day would come. Your exams are a week away and you begin with additional maths. You curse that day. Bad. Makes you wonder why people take pure maths anyway. After all, why on earth would you need to learn the theory of quadratic equations, and when x’s value was minimum or maximum? What ever happened to the good old days, back when you had algebra? Ah, algebra. A ‘not-so-very-bright’ student’s best friend. You begin to reminisce. The great times you’d been through before entering high school. You just wish you could relive some of those magical moments. Maybe change how some things went in the past. Or make them even better.

2:30am and still no sign of sleep. You feel the frustration building. Mainly because your i-pod’s on shuffle and playing Rebecca Black’s ‘Friday’. You wonder how you got that on your playlist anyway. Weird. For some reason, you feel like counting sheep. Maybe because you watched ‘Shaun the Sheep’ a while ago. You missed Spongebob by an hour because you were too busy watching Arsenal draw a match against Fulham. Kill joy.

You weren’t ashamed of admitting it (no, not supporting Arsenal). You loved Spongebob ever since you were five. Things had changed a lot since then. Your love for Spongebob, however, had not eroded even the slightest bit. Then came the sudden urge to have a burger. Or better, a Krabby Patty. 5% charge remaining- read your i-pod. Awesome. Now your only companion left for the night desired to get some rest as well. Whatever.

You unplug your headphones. That’s when you notice the city. The quiet, peaceful city you never thought that existed. You step onto the balcony and breathe in. Feels great. You can sit out here all night and not care about anything else in the world. It is that wonderful. You feel a brush against your skin. It’s your dog. The little tyke curls up into a ball on your lap and stays there. You stroke his fur. The rest is a blur. The next time you open your eyes, it’s morning. 5:30am and the sun’s rays dazzle you. Your back hurts. And oh, you’re hungry too. Unfortunately, no one’s awake yet so you’ll just have to wait.

So, fellow insomniacs, the next time you find yourself awake in the middle of the night with nothing to do, try stepping outside. Or just open the window. It’s a feeling worth feeling. Excuse the pun. Also, make sure your playlist is clear of any ‘ear- pochanofying’ songs. Tik tok, for instance. It’s just plain annoying. To me at least. Have an awesome after-midnight experience! Oh, and ignore the back pain later. Just making sure.
