I am startled awake by a soft clatter. I find myself sitting
up in an instant only to see Fideal crouching over something. I mutter,
“What...what’s happening.” She turns to me as if she only just noticed me;
“They have taken pity on us and have given us something to eat.” She grabs the
two bowls at her feet and hands one to me. In her bowl there is water and a few
small fish. In mine there is a small piece of moldy cheese and a pile of slop
that looks like mud. I look up to see her staring back at me. With a shaky
voice I manage to say, “What is this
filth.”
Fideal gives a small smile and
slowly walks to the back of our cage. As she goes she murmurs, “This is what
you will be fed. They give you just enough to survive so I suggest you don’t
spill any.” She turns he back to me as she sits down. I know she doesn’t want
to talk or even look at me. But I get up and sit beside her. My questions are
killing me so I start, “So according to the…people the Noble Ones have locked
up I’m going to save us all.” She slowly turns, “So?” I smile knowing she will
answer me, “So I want to know why the Noble Ones hate magic so much.”
She carefully places her bowl
on the floor and looks back at the bars before answering me, “They hate us.
There is nothing more to say.” I look and make sure we are alone, “Please I
need to know. I have been hiding since I could Shift. I had to act as if it was
a deadly secret. I deserve to know.”
Fideal sighs and takes hold of my left hand. And she begins the tale, “Once
upon a time the Noble One’s loved magic. They couldn’t live without it. But
they soon learned that with great power comes an even greater price. Many were
willing to pay the price for them. Until a man stood up and said enough was
enough. He made them pay the cost.” She abruptly stops and I know I have to get
her to continue. “Please tell me what happened I need to know.” She continues a
bit slower, “This man gave their son the magical gift. But the son’s heart
turned dark with the burden. He came to realize that he could control the world
and no one could stop him. He ended up killing his sister, and his father
before he could be stopped. His mother, Lady Ailis, became the first Noble One
to kill all magic. She started with killing her son.”
I take my hand back from her
and pick up my bowl. “But I still don’t understand. Not everyone turns evil so
why lock everyone up?” She picks up her bowl and takes a sip of water before
continuing, “And why should they take the chance of losing power, of the world
taken over, of having people die? They lock us up because they know we can’t rebel
when we are here.” I nibble on the rotten cheese. “They why don’t they just let
us die?” She turns to me with tears in her eyes. “They won’t let us die because
our magic is being sucked out of us as we sit here. Are life is drained from us
so there power can live on. They inflict fear of us into the minds of the
people so their title is never lost.” She blinks rapidly before the tears can
fall and she quickly drinks up what was in her bowl. “You better eat faster.
They will come for you if you are to weak to give them power.”
