Rumpelstiltskin

Rumpelstiltskin

A Stage Play by Sarah W. French
"

This is a Monologue I have written. It is based on Once Upon A Time's Rumpelstiltskin and of course the Grimm brother's faery tale.

"
Rumpelstiltskin...a name that used to mean a cowered was among the people. A name that was followed by laughter and spit.
Rumpelstiltskin...a name that now means fear. A name that is followed my desperate souls and deals.
Come to me in your time of need and I will help you. For a price of course. I'll take names, trinkets, and first born children. Anything will work.
Hold your deals till the end because now i have a story to tell.
Once upon a time there was a young woman. I remember her well. Rather tall and slender with long brown hair. Some would have considered her a beauty. Her father in a time of weakness made a promise. He said this beauty could spin straw into gold. But dearie, this was a lie. The beauty could do nothing of the sort but the King would hear none of that. So he locked her in a tower. He would get his gold or she would die.
I, recognizing a desperate soul, appeared by her side. I can spin this straw into gold...for a price. She gave me a necklace. It was worthless but i knew i would get a better deal later so I sealed the deal. I spun the straw and left her.
Of course that king couldn't stop at that. So the next night i came to her again. She gladly handed me her ring. Again worthless but my prize would come tomorrow. I spun the gold and left her in peace.
Finally on the last night she hand nothing left to give. Asking for her first born the beauty agreed. I spun her straw and to the King she was wed.
A short year later i came back for the child. The beauty tried to give me other treasures and sobbed till she ran out of tears. Remembering my brief time as a father i relented. I told her if she could guess my name in tree days she could keep the child. She nearly jumped for joy at this and as i left she started writing down every name she could.
I felt a slight pride at that...now i wish I could take that kindness back. She cheated. It was told that she sent a messenger to find names. Thats a lie. She sent a wizard to do her bidding.
He forced me to sing:
And oh! I am glad that nobody knew
That the name I am called is Rumpelstiltskin.
But don't worry dearies after the beauty 'guessed' my name and kept her precious child. I made sure to get even with that wretched wizard. He died.
