HolidaysA Poem by Saraholiday atmosphereWhen its time for the holidays You never go without The clatter of silverware on the counter A warm glow from the television in the next room Flickering lights from dozens of festive candles The murmur of voices Laughter ringing out about something the dog did The smell of scorched potato soup Cooing over the baby Hugs to aunts you’ve never met Board games among the women While the men yell at the referee Setting out snacks And calling everyone to an early dinner Bundling up in coats The windows frosting over Car lights through the front window Someone else arriving Welcome kisses and how- do- you- do’s Settling into the couch Pie plates rotating around the room Sharing Christmas CD’s Grandma handing out ornaments Dutifully decorating the tree Fascinating the toddlers With your super skills at building forts Looking at the blanket outside While cuddling in your own blanket here Footsteps and excuse me’s Walking through the house like a maze Someone spilling their cocoa Warmth and closeness Gratefully accepting gifts That everyone knows you don’t want An invasion of privacy Listening to Uncle Tim’s snoring And when its time for everyone to leave Standing up and pretending That you’ve known them forever Hugging perfect strangers Wishing you’ll see them soon And a tear or two when it all comes to an end.
