Common Understanding

Common Understanding

A Poem by Sara Caitlan VanZant
"

Rambling from a far more jaded time.

"
Let me swim in this sea of indecision.
Wallowing in discontent.
Feel the thread of this modern-day existence wear treacherously thin.

What am I getting myself into?
This irreversible whirlwind of thoughtless pursuit.
Tears that sting like salted sidewalks.

Ankles broken and skin festering.
Wandering by your window.
Am I wandering or waiting?

It's summertime.
The precision of your movements is enough to kill me.
What a waste of f*****g time.

Do I need anything?
No sustenance, no wants, no desires.
This dim shadow cannot be an existence.

No, certainly not from you.
Tell me whatever it is you need,
So I can cast you off and settle back into the sweet embrace of nonexistence.

I'm waiting for your call.
Leave for home on a moonlit road.
Why am I chasing the shadow of my own tail?

Stand on the stage for an endless minute,
Pulses of light and seasick euphoria,
I laid in your bed, with my hands on my head.

I can't entertain myself,
no matter how many time you tell me to.
Curl up with me, in this bed of misery.

Safe and warm,
deluding myself with the hard pleasure of your touch.
There nothing for you to give me.

This love is all I have to give you.
Are you feeling this?
I can try to fix this, I can understand.

Laying under the Ides of March,
You may not give me anything,
but I think that I can give enough.

Dance with me under multi-colored neon signs
on an abandoned street.
We can keep on living this way, if we don't let go.
