Smile?

Smile?

A Poem by Sanjeeta Sharma Pokharel "Hridayaninadini"

With the clattering wheels-

‘I’ heard a wagon-

Passing by-

I rushed to the window- [Ragged!]

To see

The mounting sun-

And

As usual-

To see ‘him’!

‘He’ carried the oodles

Of the ‘stones’ to the cliff-

And

Sighed!

(Wiped off his sweats!)

His sweats as weary as him

Stumbled down

And vanished in the space!

Like every day…

One thing was common in him

He wore-

The same “smile”-

As he had in the bygone yesterdays-

I looked at-

His “smile”- that remained alike-

Despite of the hurdles-

He had-

Every day !

His “smile” was concealing!

The flux of pains & grieves

Still he managed to “smile”…

After all,

I never judged him

By his “smile”!

For me-

Smile is a hide-out!

For billionths of melancholy truths!

I never judged him

By

The zenith, he stands today,

the sweats, he lost

and

the pains, he masked!

I judged him

By

“The Dust”- he roused from,

To the paramount!

Should I “smile”-

To veil-the fact

that- I am not smiling?

Vacant-went my lips!

So,

All I did-then-

Was-

I bowed

I “smiled”

                        -For him

And went my way…

A smile can definitely cure all the sadness in the world, that is, if it's felt truly and whole-heartedly whether it be for yourself or for others!
Well-done!! A powerful poem that speaks immensely about the nature of the appreciative ones and the shame that we, individuals who are given everything, should feel for taking the essence of life for granted.
Thanks for sharing and keep going!

Often the most hardworking and humble smile. Its not what they do its how they do it . You write extremely well and your art too is beautiful

Your words are true. Some people just learn to accept misery and pain. I like the way you told the story in the poem. I believe we must return the smile and respect the person. Thank you for the amazing poem.

Really liked this a lot... loved the images portrayed and the observation of the one who smiled but was not really smiling. Reminds me of the typical Aussie question "How are you mate?" And the prescriptive reply "Yeah good/great!" when really someone can be screaming on the inside... but nobody wants to hear or care... so we wear the plastic smile of pretense... giving the effect of gliding through life effortlessly... when we're all chopped up and turbulent on the inside... :( Great write! Loved it!

Stellar. An interesting, introspective piece. Like a fleeting meeting that stays with you forever.

the smile can be used as a cover up and that is what you explained... " not all those who smile - are happy ".... i love the poem and it was a great read
