Under the shed of sarcasm: To this hatching egg!

Under the shed of sarcasm: To this hatching egg!

A Poem by Sanjeeta Sharma Pokharel "Hridayaninadini"
"

The sarcasm!

"

I hold this egg

And I observe…

The white shell of it

Smooth and brittle!

I harked

A cracking sound from within

Voila, the egg is hatching!

Now I wonder about-

The freedom that shall

Cost it’s freedom!

I wonder:

The world outside, that shell, is a mere blue!

And the people outside are lethal, You have no clue!

But still if it lures you, and if you wish to hatch…

I have this couple of suggestions to you!

Once your wings are out, my feathery folk!

Act smart, walk smart and eat smart…

Even if you do not know how and where that smartness lies in…

For they’re going to judge you, Of course not by your heart!

And yeah, you perch on that money, they made,

And sleep in that bloody bed!

They shall laud you for this, my tiny folk…

In the face of your utter loyalty, they shall split your head!

Dare not to cross that “road”!

And even if you do, never let them know!

For they themselves are fighting over a piece of land!

Flap your wings, dust it off and enjoy the show!

Prove them wrong, for you know, they always are!

You are not that “chicken-hearted”

It’s just that you have that heart of a chicken!

And yeah, they seldom remember what they have said!

And your future, you will never create…

In that meat-cleaver, hides your fate!

But still, when they shall carry you by your wings!

In that gory-slaughter-house, stand brave!

(Remember!

With that chunk of bread, they eat!

Their hunger will suffice by your meat!)

If bygones were the past, live to the fullest!

That future, you will never see!

Should not haunt you, for the world outside is lethal!

Trust me, inside this shell, you are free!

And that little-yellow-folk,
Pops-out of that egg!
And again, I observe,
Silently...

I like the extended metaphor that forms the basis of your poem. A chicken makes for a particularly interesting subject, considering that the poor birds are often considered clumsy and stupid. I see more cynicism than sarcasm in the poem, to be honest, but a majority of readers will be able to relate to the poem. I particularly liked one of your final thoughts, that the chick's confinement itself is its freedom, because nobody can penetrate the shell to snatch it away from it. So often we go out and get tangled in the fabric of society, trying to abide by its convoluted protocols, when we could have lived and died free in a long forgotten corner of the world. But perhaps the egg-shell that protects us from the hostile world outside can also become a dreadful prison of loneliness that we inevitably try to escape. An evil choice indeed, with suffocation on either side.... A highly thought-provoking write! Well done!

Your involved perception of leaving these thoughts alone is incredible uplifting in all sense, well done, good read.

Thanks Leslie :)
"live for a future you will never see"

a great line with such insight...today? i think we are much like the chickens, only we are the ones holding our own meat cleavers, hovering over our throats...
everything is such a mess in the world, i wonder how long we will survive...and i am not sure how long i want to be around anyway, with how things are going so downhill...

love your analogy in this...stephen wright (the comedian) asked the chicken why he crossed the road and the chicken said "it's none of your business"---
yes it is like that now...everyone into him or herself...content to be left alone and not get involved.

Well said, Jacob. Thanks for reading and reviewing :)
I like the thoughts. Gave life and spirit to the old tale. I wonder would we leave the egg if we knew what was outside. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.

Quite a satire Sanjeeta ... which is really something very ... very ... tricky to write ... especially from inside an egg. Nice.
