Why I Want to Be A TeacherA Story by Sandra K
When I was asked what I wanted to be when I grow up I had ideas. There are so many jobs in the world, but I still had not made my final decision. I do remember back- in the day when I was seven years old; I came running out of my bedroom to tell my mom that I wanted to be a vegetarian when I grow up. She laughed and corrected me, you want to be a veterinarian. Finally crunch time came and I wanted to have a successful career. I decided I want to do something that involved writing and children. My step dad mentioned to me about becoming a teacher. With much thought, I made my final decision to become a secondary English education teacher.
I sat and pondered about what kind of life I will have if I became a teacher. I knew I want to decent job and have time for to raise a family. This is something that is very important to me. I will have two summer months off is a huge benefit that most jobs dont have. I will be able to bond with my family and friends during these times. I also love to travel and view new sites. I want to travel the world; to France, Egypt, Columbia, and take a cruise or two with a few close friends. Holidays are wonderful joyous times of the year. I have worked during Thanksgiving, and hated it. I was thankful for the money I made, but it took away the times that are meant to spend with family. It is great news to hear that I will be able to enjoy the turkey dinner with my family and friends. It is also great news to hear that I will be able to see the face of my children opening their Christmas gifts on Christmas mornings as well. The second thought I came up with is paying back to the world. I am not a religious person, but I do believe that we are on this earth to make it a better place for our future children and grand children. To me thats a major factor of living. A first start in giving back to the world is to start with the local community. An example will be volunteering at the local food bank donating and serving food. While participating, the chance to know the community and what is really going on in the community is just in your line of vision. Volunteering, as a citizen to the community, will help those who in need and at the same time meet other citizens in the community. I know as a teacher this plays a big part in the professional role. To the community, parents and students, I will be setting an example as someone who really cares about what is going on, and taking sudden interest. The parents will put faith and trust in teachers who will be with their children for five days a week. A student will look at a teacher as someone who is reliable and trust worthy to come to if needed. Not only will a teacher will build street credit by participating in the service but teachers have the chance to encourage students and neighbors to participate in the service, with the effort of giving incentives to those students who bring in a large amount of canned foods, and have them encourage their friends and neighbors to chip in too. Lastly, the thought of watching children grow into better and smarter human beings is the entire purpose of my career. The teacher will welcome the student to new thought, new career options, and a new way of life. A teachers goal is for a student to walk through the classroom door in August, as a person who only know what they learned the years before, and when May or June comes around, they walk out with strong shoulders and have the right to say they are better of a person than they were ten months ago. My personal goals as a teacher is to help the students in any way need. I want my students to be opened minded to every opportunity, every possibility available to the student. I want them to say yes, a black man can be our president, and a woman has equal opportunity as a man. I also want them to say I hated math or English, but now I know why this is a necessary course I have to take. Spending ten month out of the year, five days a week, an hour each day, listening to 30- 150 students talk, watching them explore and work hard to accomplish what they want in life is an experience by itself. There will be those students who will need motivation, and those who will need a new direction onto the correct road, I am the one willing to do it. Student growth is why I am in for this career. To conclude this essay, I will say, there are lot more reason to become a teacher than just the three I listed. These are just my top three. Family is my most important thing to me. They are the reason why I am here today. Community involvement is something that not only teachers and church people should do, but lawyers and doctors and businessmen should take a time out of their busy schedules too, and give a helping hand. The growth of a student to a teacher is why they have a job today. If a student is not succeeding, than neither am I. A teacher builds hope, and love for the students, hoping that they do go on and succeed in the future, accomplish their dreams, and eventually come back and tell the tale. Teacher love the memories of their students, so they can share with future students. It is not a easy career, actually very time consuming and lots of patients and planning it takes to run a classroom, but its a job that I am willing to tackle and succeed. © 2008 Sandra KReviews
