Episode 1: Infiltration

“Grim, you in position?” I ask. I slowly crawled through the deep brush, the rain from above felt like ice as it pelted my face and the sound of it hitting my rifle sounded like a dozen pencils being dropped all at once, I knew this infiltration mission was supposed to be a breeze but command definitely did not take into account the drastic weather change, typical. After a moment of silence my radio sprung into life. “Sand? You there man? The voice called. “Grim?” is that you?” I asked. “Yeah, sorry coms went out after the drop, the storm must have screwed with the signal, I’ve been at the observation point for 20 minutes trying to fix this s**t, good thing all that training back at the “Sand Pit” paid off,” Grim replied jokingly. I felt some relief wash over me, which was a good sign if Grim survived the drop the others must have also. “Anything from Immortal and Vertigo?” I asked, still moving through the grass. “Nothing yet, but I’m sure they are good s**t Immortal isn’t Immortal for no reason, and Vertigo isn’t gonna go down without killing something first,” Grim replied. I laughed a little, he was right, I’ve known Immortal for as long as I can remember, I’d say ever since Grim, him, me, and our buddy Undead joined the S.T.A.R.T unit. S.T.A.R.T, which stood for Special Tactics and Reconnaissance Team, was by far the hardest training we had to go through besides basic training to even get into SEGMA CORP. We’ve seen it all, the anti Russian terrorist takedown in 2015 and of course the incident that gave both Undead and Immortal their nicknames. It was in the winter of 2016 at the beginning of the counter insurgency in Korea, We were tasked out along with Bishop Team to handle a disturbance in one of the low-lying villages east of Bussan. Intelligence had discovered a small group rebel fighters moving explosives into a warehouse and were planning on taking them to Bussan to take out on of our embassies. Long story short when we arrived a huge firefight broke out injuring two of our squad members and killing one. Immortal and Undead were the two who were injured. In the midst of the fighting, one of the rebel fighters fired an RPG at both of them knocking them into a ravine that was 10 feet below the village. We thought they were dead, but those sons’ of b*****s managed to pull themselves out with only minor injuries, Immortal had a broken leg. I kept thinking about that for a moment, “They are fine,” I thought to myself as I moved towards a clearance. “Grim? What’s your location?” I asked as I slowly moved to a tree near the clearing. “About 3 clicks from you according to the GPS,” Replied Grim, “if you move now I can cover you.” I hesitated for a moment, once I moved out of the clearing I’d be open and any fighters who would be on watch would take me out instantly, but than again Grim was the best sharpshooter in the business. I started to sprint towards Grim’s location and took cover beside him. “Took you long enough,” Grim Teased. “F**k off,” I replied nudging him on the shoulder, “So what’s it look like?” Grim looked through the scope of his rifle, nice choice if I may say, a Remington MSR. “I count about 8 guards, nothing I can’t manage,” Grim replied smiling. “Grim? Sand? You guys there?” another voice called over the radio. “Vertigo, Immortal is that you guys?” I asked. “F**k yeah, where are you guys?” asked Immortal. “Looks like were on the opposite side of the field as you guys are on,” I replied, “This storm blew everyone off course on the jump in.” “Damn,” Replied Immortal, “Well I have the only working radio, Vertigo landed on his and it’s smashed to s**t, but he’s with me, we’re gonna make our way up to the site and prepare to infiltrate the location.” Me and Grim looked at each other, “Roger that,” I replied as I nodded to Grim. “Time to make a presence,” said Grim as he looked down his scope. The suppressed rifle hissed as the rounds flew out of the barrel hitting all 8 targets right on the dot. “Kill shots, everyone of them,” said Grim sounding pleased with himself. “Vertigo says he could do better,” said Immortal chuckling. “Well tell him to eat a dick,” said Grim. I pulled out my binoculars and scoped the area; no one had noticed the guards were down yet. “We move now guys,” I said patting Grim to move up. As we made our way to the side entrance we prepped our gate cutters to enter the compound. “Vertigo says there’s about 20 hostiles total, 3 guarding the package,” said Immortal. “Looks like this will be quick and clean then,” I replied cocking my rifle. Grim looked down grinning, “You and your damn 416.” “What? It’s never let me down in any mission,” I replied smiling. All four of us prepped the gate cutters and prepped for our assault. “On my count guys, once were in take out the hostiles and retrieve the package, 1...2…3!” I said as Grim pressed down on the cutters. The gate fell to pieces and in an instant bullet was being exchanged across the compound. “1..2..3..4,” Grim began counting. “Are you serious?!” I asked dodging a round from a machine gun. “What,” asked Grim, “Making this fun.” As rounds flew past I could make out Immortal and Vertigo getting closer to the shack containing the package. “Grim, cover me!” I called sprinting towards the two. “GET DOWN!” cried Immortal. I dropped to the ground and felt blood spray my back. “Headshot! Got him Sand!” yelled Immortal as Vertigo helped me up. “Looks like that’s the last of them, lets grab this s**t and go,” I said moving up to the shack. Grim and Vertigo took point as Immortal and I went through retrieving the Intel needed from command. “What the hell is this?” asked Immortal as he picked up the silver case. “Command requested it, apparently it’s something important that the rebel fighters stole during their raid on one our FOBs a few days ago, Top Secret stuff I would assume, either way lets get out of here before the storm gets worse, “ I replied. We moved out of the shack to regroup with the others who had already placed an extraction beacon. Stef and Raven say they are inbound ETA 5 minutes, “ said Vertigo. “That’s what we came all this way for?” asked Grim staring at the case, “I hope that damn thing is important enough for me to catch pneumonia over.” I looked down at the case that was clutched to my side and thought the same thing, only did we all know that that case was about to change everything in the Korean Counter Insurgency. “Oh and by the way Vertigo, I got 11 kills,” said Grim grinning. “Shut up,” Vertigo replied laughing.

Episode 2: Ghost From the Past

The flight back to camp was fast, I knew the break wasn’t going to be long but at least the guys could grab chow before our next mission. “All right guys make sure yall are prepped incase we get called out again,” I said. “Damn back to back runs into the field, I wish command would just send in the MGF instead of resorting to S.T.A.R.T involvement,” says Vertigo. “Command wants to keep the operation under wraps, no need in involving ground units if the special forces teams can handle it, MARSOC, and Seals have been doing there drop ins along the southern edge of Bussan while we push any rebel fighters out of the out lying areas, it makes sense,” replied Immortal. “Touchdown in 5 minutes guys!” called Raven over the speaker. As we landed at the camp we made our way to the hanger to prep our gear for the next mission. “Captain!” a voice called. I turned, “Corporal Reyes, and to what pleasure do I have for your run in today?” I asked. “Commander Kinhofer has sent for you, sir,” replied Reyes. Only thought in my mind was the package we recovered at the compound; that’s what this had to be about. “Alright guys get some rest, Immortal, I’ll get with you later to address you on what the Commander has to say,” I said. “Roger that,” replied Immortal as the group turned to walk to the hooch’s. I followed Reyes up to the command deck where Kinhofer was waiting. “Ah, Sand I take it the mission went well then?” Kinhofer asked as I placed the Package on the table. “Yes sir, I’m more curious to why you needed to speak with me?” I replied. “Sand, you’ve known me for a long time now, no need to be so formal,” Kinhofer replied as he began to open the case. “Derek, you would only want me up here if it were important not just to chit chat, this case what is it?” I asked. Derek looked at me and down at the open case. “What I am about to tell you is top secret, the contents in this case contain Intel on an operation called ENDGAME, it is a plan that the rebel insurgent group has devised in order to take out Bussan, problem is we have learned they aren’t working alone hence why the Intel was stolen from FOB Jericho 6 days ago,” Derek replied. “Who else is in on this operation?” I asked. “US, and Russian intelligence have discovered that remnants of Red Horn operatives that made it out of Moscow after the counter insurgency last year have made their way to North Korea to help plot and fund this operation, but the problem is who is leading the whole thing,” replied Derek. I could tell something was wrong; he kept looking into the case before finally pulling out a yellow file with documents in it. “Who is behind it? We captured everyone else or at least took them out in the last raid we commenced right before we declared the insurgency was over in Russia,” I asked. Derek passed the folder across the table, “Take a look for your self,” He replied. I looked though the files, but what stood out was a surveillance photo that was taken a week before by one of our UAV drones. “What the hell is this? Is this a joke?” I asked. “I’m afraid not,” replied Derek his expression cold. “This is not possible I watched him die, he was with us that night of the raid, he was my wing man, this can’t be true,” I asked I could feel my body trembling. “I’m afraid that intelligence both with the US, Russian, and even South Koreans have verified this information to be true, he betrayed all of us and as it turns out he has been the one behind Red Horn all along,” replied Derek. “Meta,” I said coldly, “That son of a b***h, I watched him die or so I thought I did, how could this have happened?” Derek frowned and turned away, “This explains all of the massive casualties we took during the whole operation in Russia,” he replied, “He knew our every step and was feeding information back to his fellow Red Horn followers, All of us in command had a feeling there was a rat amongst us and he must have picked up on that and so on the night of the final raid he plotted out his fake death to cover up his identity before we could seek him out.” I punched the table and walked to the door. “I lost 15 of my guys during that operation and he caused Immortal and Undead to get injured, that b*****d is going to pay with his life,” I said. “You may get your wish sooner than you think, one of our S.A.I teams are location of the possible compound holding all of the missiles that are planned to be used on the attack on Bussan, and they have located not only a large group of rebel fighters but also Red Horn operatives as well, they have also sighted Meta on sight conducting inspections of the area. “So why not have air support blow those a******s to hell?” I ask. “Those missiles are extremely dangerous, the operation is not called ENDGAME for nothing, those missiles are called Zodiacs when fired they triangulate around its target and detonate in the air causing a downward shockwave that can devastate any urban city in seconds, “replied Derek. “So why Bussan?” I asked. “We believe it’s a test sight to see what the Zodiacs are capable of, and depending on the outcome of this operation they will move to bigger cities,” Derek replied, “One missile can kill thousands, they have 30 of them according to reports.” “So we do not want to let those things go off then, makes sense, we go in take out the trash and disarm the missiles sounds legit,” I said, “When’s our flight out of here?” Derek smiled, “Get your guys ready Abel and Bishop are going now.”

Episode 3: Operation: Blackout

“I can’t believe this s**t,” said Immortal, “F*****g Meta, I knew that a*****e was no good.” After telling everyone what Commander Kinhofer had told me; the guys were on edge and were ready for payback. “I’ll put one between his eyes, him and his little f*****g Red Horn b******s,” said Grim as he put a magazine into his MSR. Vertigo sat in silence and I couldn’t even think straight, Meta was one of us, or I thought he was but it was all a game. We had picked him up prior to Operation Soviet Hammer, but when we were called in to assist the Russian government last year with a terrorist cell that had emerged calling themselves Red Horn, who were a militant group set on restoring the old Soviet order, we figured the mission would only take 4 months tops, but from the start we took heavy casualties from both our side and Russian military. As four months turned into six and six turned into a year we began to lose hope on victory against Red Horn. In the end though after finally pushing the enemy to their breaking point we managed to dispose of what was left of their forces or took them into custody for questioning. “All right guys we need to focus, Meta is not the priority here it’s the Zodiacs that need to be taken care of,” I said. “Do we have an ETA on how long we have before the first missiles goes off?” asked Vertigo. “Command says once they are set we have 5 minutes to disarm them,” I replied. “Do we have any support for this mission?” asked Grim. “MGF have dispatched Gemini Company, and Prophet Company to assist with this mission and Raven and Stef will remain on location for air support if needed, besides that we’re going in first with Bishop Team and Gypsy Squad.” “Destroy the missile silos and eliminate any hostile retaliation and get some sweet revenge, sounds like a plan, “said Immortal smiling. “ETA 2 minutes guys!” Raven called over the radio. “All right guys this is it, ready up!” I said. Everyone stood and prepared for touchdown, I could feel my adrenalin burning up and my heart pounding. “Ok guys! Move stay safe and keep your heads down!” cried Stef as we piled into the open field. I could hear the silent hum of the osprey slowly fade away into the night. There was a nice breeze blowing through field, the only light we had was from the full moon, which illuminated the area. “NVGs on guys, we’re going dark,” I said. I could see Bishop Team running up through the brush. “Hey guys,” said Undead. “Looks like were all here, lets get to Gypsy’s location and from there we can determine our movements from there,” I said. As we moved through the brush, I could feel my heart beating rapidly, this was it or so I hoped, to finally put an end to Red Horn and finish the rebellion. “So, what are we going to do about him?” asked Undead. “Mission first, then we can handle Meta,” I replied. “What are we supposed to be looking for?” asked Immortal. “There should be an IR signal set up to designate their location,” I replied. As we moved through the clearing of the brush, there was a sudden change in the environment, there were some hills that formed into a small canyon and towards the end of the canyon was the compound. “I see them, they’re on top of that hill,” Vertigo said. “Good, we’ll move ahead to get into position, Undead if you want to take your guys and grab Gypsy and meet us at the location that would be great, “I said. “Actually, I’ll have Counter and Switch grab them, Forkem and me will move on with you guys,” said Undead. We split ways and headed into position outside of the compound. “This is Oscar 3 Sierra, Prophet 1 standby for further instructions, preparing for assault on the compound,” I said over the com. “Roger that Oscar 3 Sierra, Prophet and Gemini standing by,” replied Prophet 1. “Ok Grim, do you still have your SUAV?” I asked. “Never leave home without it,” replied Grim smiling. “Good, get it up in the air and do a quick sweep of the compound, since that thing can give us thermal readings we can see how many of these fuckers we have to deal with,” I said. As Grim set up his SUAV, Gypsy, Switch and Counter returned. “Nice to see you guys, its been a while Zen, Slinger, “I said. “About time you guys showed up,” replied Slinger, “we’ve been here on a 24 hour observation monitoring these a*s holes.” What’s the plan?” asked Zen. “Grim is doing a quick sweep to see what we’re up against, after the plan is to move into the compound separately, get to the warehouse that the Zodiacs are sitting in and use an EMP charge to fry those fuckers and render them useless,” I replied. “You guys focus on the hostiles we will take out the missiles,” said Slinger, “those are our orders.” “Hey guys, we are looking at 45 guys in this place and they are spread out everywhere,” said Grim. “Damn it, we’ll have to be smart about this, Immortal, you and Counter take a position on the hill side looking into the compound to provide cover fire and Vertigo, you and Grim take a position for sniper cover, as for Undead, Forkem, and Switch you guys are with me and Gypsy,” I said. “Sounds like a plan,” said Immortal, “you guys don’t get your asses killed down there.” After a few moments everyone was in place, it was time to commence the operation. “Operation Blackout is a go!” I called over the com, “shoot to kill guys.” We pushed our way through the entrance to the compound; rounds began flying instantly. Immortal and Counter let off flares to help our vision as we maneuvered through the hooch’s and transport trucks, firing hastily at the enemy. As one after one of rebel fighter fell we slowly made our way to the warehouse. “That was too easy,” I said panting. “Guys everything looks clear from up here, Gypsy is clear to move into the warehouse,” said Grim. “Prophet and Gemini form a perimeter around the compound, we are preparing to disarm the missiles,” I said over the com. “You guys stay here we’ve got this, “said Slinger as he moved to the door. BAM! I could see Slinger slowly slump to the ground, blood trickling from his head. “Son of a b***h, sniper!” I cried. Everyone took cover panning back and fourth along the hillside. “S**t, it’s too dark to figure out where his a*s is!” cried Forkem. “Zen how is he?” I asked. “Slingers gone,” replied Zen his face pale. “S**t!” I said, “Grim, Vertigo can you find this guy?” “Working on it,” replied Grim, “Wait I see that b*****d, Vertigo take him out!” “With pleasure,” replied Vertigo. All was silent for a moment, “Snipers down, did you really have to break his neck?” said Grim. “Better than nothing,” replied Vertigo. “Ok Zen it’s on you now,” I said. “Wait what’s that sound?” asked Switch. There was a loud humming sound coming from inside the warehouse. “S**t the missiles,” Zen cried as he pushed open the doors. A large flash of light and an explosion engulfed Zen flinging him into a set of hooch’s. “Zen! I cried, “We have a tank! I say again we have a tank!” I could see Prophet and Gemini operatives rounding the corners of the hooch’s and firing in the direction of the warehouse. “We need to get inside and destroy those missiles!” cried Forkem. We got up and made our way to the rear of the warehouse. “The back door, we can make our way to the holding area and take out the zodiacs before Red Horn realizes what were doing,” I said, “Forkem, Switch check on Zen, me and Undead can take care of this.” “Right,” said Forkem as they turned to head back towards the fighting. “Are you ready?” I asked. “For Payback” replied Undead cocking his M1014.

Episode 4: Reunion

Undead and I made our way through the warehouse we could hear the warzone outside was still raging between our guys and Red Horn operatives. “I hope everyone is ok,” whispered Undead. “Just focus on taking out those missiles,” I replied. We walked into an open area where we could see the silos lined and prepared for departing the warehouse. “We just need to get the charges on,” I said. “Good you take care of that, I’ll look for Meta,” said Undead. I moved towards the silos and began setting the charges. “This is going smoother than I thought,” I said placing the last charge. Before I could turn I could feel a sharp pain run through my side. “It’s been a long time Sand,” a voice whispered behind me. “Meta, you’ve got some nerve you b*****d,” I replied stepping back. I could feel blood slowly seeping down my side. “You can’t confront me in person, instead you take the coward way and stab me when my back is turned?” I asked. “Well you, and Segma Corp keep interfering with my plans and seeing as ENDGAME seems to be a failure I feel it’s time for me to take my leave, but don’t worry this isn’t the last time you’ll see me,” replied Meta smiling. “That’s where your wrong buddy,” said Undead. Meta turned to face Undead pulling out his pistol. BAM, I could see Meta stumbling back and slowly falling to the ground. “I got ya,” said Undead picking me up. “The charges are set,” I said as we moved out of the warehouse. As we walked outside, we were met with dozens of Segma Corps operatives running all over. We regrouped with the rest of Bishop and Abel team. Everyone looked exhausted but I could sense the feeling of accomplishment amongst them. “We need to get Sand out of here, our confrontation with Meta left him with good knife wound, “said Undead. “At least you got to him before we did, “said Immortal. I could feel myself losing consciousness as everything around me slowly faded to black. A few weeks past and I was back on my feet, Segma held a memorial for those lost during Operation: Crimson Dragon. It was staggering that in 6 months we had lost over 48 operatives, one being a friend of mine. It never gets easier to deal with the loss of your fellow soldiers or even your friends but that was the price we paid for doing the job that we did. Today seemed like a good day though, we were all back in California and most were either on leave or training, me however, I decided to take a walk. The nice spring breeze blew through the trees as I moved down the concrete path. “Mind if I join you?” a voice called from next to me. “Derek, surprising seeing you out of your office, “I replied jokingly. “Yes I do time from time tend to step out for a period of time,” Derek said with a small grin, “You guys did very well Sand, out of the years of serving along side you within Segma I would have never thought that after I departed S.T.A.R.T that I would be placed in a position where I would be giving you the orders instead of receiving them. “Are you here to gloat?” I asked grinning. “No, by no means,” replied Derek, “as a matter of fact I wanted to tell you that it has been an honor leading you guys as your Commander, I don’t have to worry about any of you accomplishing your mission.” “Stop you’re getting me all choked up,” I replied. “Be sarcastic all you want, it’s true,” laughed Derek. “So let me ask you something,” I asked, “When the investigation team came in and cleared the warehouse, did you find a body?” Derek’s smile faded, “No,” he replied. “I thought it was too easy,” I said with a smirk. “We just need to be ready, I’m sure this isn’t the last time we heard from Red Horn either,” said Derek. As we continued to walk I thought to myself, how long the peace would last before Red Horn revealed themselves again, only to find out later how soon that time would eventually come.
