You Asked Why

You Asked Why

A Poem by Sammie Sanchez

You asked a simple question,

Though you expected a complicated answer

Why?  You said staring at me as though I was large tiger in tiny cage

Oh how I wish my answer was as simple as your question

And as though my wish came true,

My simple answer came to me,

The streets made me do it

Your answer to this was a mixture of

What the hell? & What have you been smoking?

So I explained

What do you think of when I say the streets?

Gangs? Drugs? Guns?

Well you are right, but that’s not it

My family is the only reason I have a gun

See I need a gun at my side at night while I sleep because

God have mercy on whoever tries to come through my home, because I won’t.

He touched my daughter

And for that happening, I don’t think even God would have mercy.

So you ask me why.

And I told you

The streets made me do it
