Things I Remember as a Child

Things I Remember as a Child

A Poem by Samuel E. Haven

Things I remembered as a child

… Like autumn leaves

‘cross empty streets

… All those scattered browns and greens

Fluttering along the wind-swept trees.

… Like winter skies

So smooth and grey

…Clouds forming different shapes

As they move away,

And dissipate into the lake of ‘finite grey

… There they will remain.

Like spring time rain

… And chocolate ice cream cones

At times I remember as a child

At times I was alone.

At times dad and I would at lengths talk

On the phone.

As rain forms intricate rivers on the window glass.

… So then summer comes and goes…

Rain dried up, replaced with days though days would also pass.

The heat would blaze alongside sparkling pools

As children splash and shout

Like fools we run about.

Things I remember as a child

… Memories so faint and distant

Like reaching through a faded picture

… But retrieving only dust and sand.

For what once was

Is sodden dreams and broken plans.

Though at times I wonder

How differently things could have happened

What makes us sad and sundered…

… Is only what the wind

Will bring us once again.

Things I remember as a child.

… Are only but a gathering of roads.

Leading to one path,

One path we ride the winds of time,

The winds of the past we flow.

Very enjoyable, this is. I spend much time remembering my childhood, so this is familiar music to my ears. We were little sponges when young, soaking in everything with clear, unclogged senses and pure hearts.
