Fall FairA Poem by SamhwainI wrote this in AP Us History years ago on the back of a test. My teacher even scanned it and submitted it to the school Soup Stone. Never went anywhere, but it was a nice gesture
The warm scent of caramel greets you as you enter the fair.
The smell of fresh hay is everywhere. Kids and candy apples smeared on their hands and faces, laughter and cool autumn air music and lights merry and bright in the facing sun someone screams from atop a roller coaster a show is being held at the other end stars dance in the black, black sky as guests reach the max Children now pounce on each other, in a clumsy fashion as layers of fabric and masks weigh them down, laughing Parents chat idly following and disentangling the kids who grow grumpier by the hour it's time to say good bye, for come morning, the fair shall be gone. Bitterness will hang on every gust, cold and clinging to every tree as skeletal limbs reach for the sun fog will collect 'pon your breath as you stumble inside once more to the hustle and bustle of school. Autumn but a distant memory as once more you sit in class and wait the bell's toll of spring © 2012 Samhwain |
