Runaway from the Cheater

Runaway from the Cheater

A Chapter by Samantha Young

Happiness never lasts long. My mother was gone, thanks to my dad kicking her out. The divorce papers were already drawn up. Life seemed to be perfect. My sister still lived with us until she decided who she wanted to live with for a long term period. I got a great score on my SAT’s. I was patiently waiting for responses from colleges, as was Brian. However, like I said before, happiness never lasts long.

“That’s what I heard.” Jyn said quietly to me in my room at 7 in morning. “Matthew cheated on you with Sarah! Of all people, her? I mean, I know you’re sort of friends with her, but . . . she’s horrible Sammy!”

“I’ll find out the truth myself.” I muttered as I stood up and grabbed my cell and car keys.

“How?” Jyn frowned. “You aren’t seriously thinking about confronting her?”

“Yes.” I nodded. “Are you coming with?”

“Of course I am!” Jyn snapped. “You can’t do this without back up. I’ll call Brian.”

“No!” I grabbed her phone quickly. “No . . . Brian can’t know about this one.”

Jyn stared at me as if I had just spoken Japanese. “But . . . you tell him everything. He’s always there for you. That’s how it’s always been.”

“Not this time.” I threw her phone back.

I walked out the room and headed out the house to my car. Jyn slipped into the passenger seat and continued babbling till we drove into the city. I drove straight to Sarah’s house and saw Matthew’s car parked outside.

“Hell no!” Jyn exclaimed as she grabbed her cell phone.

I shook my head and killed the engine. I stepped out the car and walked into Sarah’s house. I nodded to her father who waved to me. I nodded  my head to him and walked down the hall to Sarah’s room. I threw the door open and stared at the naked male body of my boyfriend on top of Sarah’s naked body. Matthew jumped slightly, glanced back at me, cursed and climbed off of Sarah. I shook my head, turned on my heel and walked off.

“Sammy!” Matthew called as he followed me out of the house.

I ignored him and pulled my keys from my pocket.

“Please, listen!” he screamed as he grabbed my hand and spun me to face him.

I stared at his, no half naked, body. He touched my cheek lightly and sighed.

“I’m so sorry.” He blurted out. “I didn’t want you to find out about this. I love you, so much. But . . . you won’t let me have sex with you, so I needed to find some other outlet. Sarah offered to have sex with me. One time with her . . . led to another . . . and then another. But it’s just sex, I swear!”

“This is your apology?” I shook my head. “You cheated! How could you? I thought you loved me?”

“I do!” he grabbed both my shoulders. “Oh, how much I love you! But . . . you refuse to have sex with me! What was I supposed to do?”

“You were supposed to wait!” I snapped. “Like every other boyfriend!”

“I know.” He sighed and gripped my tighter. “Please, forgive me! It won’t happen again.”

“Yea right!” Jyn piped up. “Once a cheater, always a cheater!”

“Shut up, Jyn.” Sarah snapped from the porch.

“Don’t even speak, Sarah!” I bellowed.

“Excuse me?” Sarah released a loud laugh. “You couldn’t give your man physical pleasure. I was just helping. You’re the idiot.”

“B***h!” I moved towards her, but Matthew pushed me back.

“Don’t touch her. It’s not her fault.” He begged. “I cheated. I did the wrong thing. But now, I ask you for forgiveness.”

I grabbed Matthew’s hand on my shoulder, bent his wrist back, causing it to snap, and pushed him against the wall. He screamed out in pain and clung to his wrist.

“Damn you, Sammy!” he yelled.

I opened my mouth to say something, but my head immediately turned to the direction of Brian’s bike. I smiled slightly as Brian rode up towards us. Matthew covered his face and sighed. I turned to walk over to Brian, but Matthew grabbed my hand and pulled me towards him.

“Please?” he asked.

“A*****e!” Brian snapped as he walked over to Matthew and punched his face hard.

I smiled a bit more as Brian grabbed my car keys from my hand and threw it to Jyn.

“Don’t call, or come near Sammy again.” Brian warned as he kicked Matthew, who was now on the ground in pain. “Jyn, drive Sammy’s car to her house.”

Jyn nodded, grinned and hopped into the driver’s seat of my car. Brian gently too my hand and led me to his bike. I took the helmet from his hand and put it on.

“Sammy!” Matthew screamed. “I’m sorry.”

“So am I.” I shrugged and climbed onto the bike.

I wrapped my arms around Brian’s waist and clung to him tightly as he rode off quickly. Brian rode at an increasingly fast pace. He seemed to be angrier than I was, but I didn’t object to his speed. He headed down the north coast, towards my house. He parked, but remained sitting on the bike, staring at the ground. I slowly climbed off and moved to his side. I gently pulled his helmet off, and for the first time in my entire life, I was Brian’s eyes black with anger.

“Brian . . .” I touched his cheek tentatively.

He grabbed my hand and pulled me roughly against his body. He clung to me as he breathed in and out deeply. I felt him reach up and stroke my hair softly.

“I can’t believe anyone would want to hurt someone as beautiful and sweet as you.” He whispered. “I’ll kill him if I could.”

“I know.” I relaxed against his body and sighed. “I guess people aren’t always who they say they are.”

Brian nodded and climbed off the bike.

“What are you going to do now?” he asked.

“I just need to distract myself.” I said as Jyn drove into my driveway. “I just need something else to do to stop thinking about this.”

“I say we take a little vacation down the islands.” Jyn offered as she got out the car.

“I agree.” Brian nodded and they both turned to me for the decision.

“I’ll go ask dad for the keys for the boat “ I shook my head smiling.

“Awesome, well, we’ll all head home to pack, and meet at the docks?” Jyn asked.

I nodded my head and headed into the house. Dad was in the living room watching Law and Order. He looked up at me and instantly knew something was wrong.

“What happened?” he frowned.

“Matthew cheated.” I shrugged.

“Ah.” He sighed. “I’m sorry sweetie.”

“It’s ok.” I shook my head and sat down next to him.

He wrapped an arm around my shoulder and pulled me against him. “Let’s hear the request.”

“Well, Brian and Jyn . . . and I, were wondering if you’ll let us take the boat down the islands for the weekend?” I bit down on my lower lip.

“Take your cell and charger.” He began. “I want a check up when you get there, during the night, and when you’re on your way back. The keys are on the hook.”

“Thanks daddy!” I kissed his cheeks.

“It’s not a problem Sam.” He smiled and ruffled my hair. “Just be careful.”

I nodded my head and ran up the stairs to my room to pack. I threw my bathing suit and a few clothes into my duffel bag. I grabbed my phone charger and made my way back downstairs. I grabbed the keys from the hook, kissed dad one more time, and ran out to my car. I quickly texted Jyn and Brian and drove down the coast to the docks. I parked and went up to the dock master to tell them which boat I was taking out. They quickly got the boat off the docks and into the water. I threw my back pack in and waited for Brian and Jyn.

“Awesome!” Jyn grinned as she walked up to the edge of the dock and jumped into the boat with her back pack.

“Now, just to wait on Brian and we’ll be off.” I smiled and checked the gas meter.

“Cool.” Brian jumped into the boat a few minutes later with his duffel bag.

“Is it just you three kids?” the dock master asked.

“Yep.” I nodded, started the engine and drove off.

***

Our small Caribbean called Trinidad, has a trail of tiny islands along the north coast. On each of these islands, some families have built houses that they can stay in while they spend time down the islands, away from the city life. My dad’s family owns a house, as does Brian’s and Jyn’s .

“So, who’s house?” I asked.

“Oh!” Jyn giggled. “I forgot, mom said they just stocked our house, so we can use mine.”

“Great.” Brian and I said at the same time.

I drove the speed boat towards Jyn’s dock and parked. Brian jumped out first and tied the rope to secure the boat. I threw him his duffel bag as he finished tying the boat up. He helped Jyn out with her backpack. I climbed out with my duffel bag and followed Jyn up the steps to her house. Jyn’s family owns a two storey house with seven bedrooms. We made our way inside and quickly picked out our own rooms. Jyn pulled off her clothes and revealed her bathing suit.

“Sammy, I have a surprise for you.”

She grabbed my hand and led me down the stairs of the house towards a storage room. She turned on the light and I gasped as I stared at five, hardly used, surfboards.

“But . . . there are no waves by docks . . .” I stared at her curiously.

“That’s the other surprise.” She grinned.

I pulled off my clothes while she screamed for Brian to come downstairs. I grabbed the blue and black board, while Brian took the red and green board. Jyn settled for plain white and orange board. She grinned at me as she walked out through the back door of the house. She led us over the small hill to the other side of the island. I gasped as I stood on top of the hill and stared down at the white sand beach. It wasn’t the beach that made me gasp, but the mountain foot waves that crashed onto the beach.

“Oh Jyn . . .” I whispered as I clung to the board and ran down to the beach.

“Awesome!” Brian screamed as he followed me.

Jyn laughed and ran down after us. I didn’t bother to wax the board. I just dove into the water, swam out and started surfing. After a few hours of surfing, I stopped and sat down on the beach, watching Brian and Jyn still surf.

“Hi!” someone shouted from the end of the beach.

I looked up into the blue eyes of a boy my brother’s age. I stood up and waved him over. He came over with his friend, who was also my brother’s age.

“You look like my friend’s sister.” The blue eyed boy said as he came closer.

“Well, who’s your friend?” I asked.

“Jeremy Routhier, you know him?” he smiled.

“That’s my brother.” I chuckled. “I’m Samantha.”

“Paul.” He shook my hand gently. “My friend Scott and I were just visiting the islands for a little vacation before school started.”

“Hi, Scott.” I looked across at the quieter boy.

He nodded his head and looked out at the water. Scott was tall, at least 6’2, and very slim. His hair was medium brown and shaggy. His were dark brown and twinkled. He had milky white skin.

Paul, on the other hand, had dark blonde hair that was straight and fell in front of his deep blue eyes. He was just as tall as Scott, but more muscular. His skin was just as white as Scott’s.

“Where are you guys staying?” I wondered.

“My parents bought the house down the end of the beach last year.” Paul pointed to the three storey house. “So, Scott and I decided to get away from New Jersey, and visit the house for a bit.”

“That’s awesome.” I smiled a bit.

Brian and Jyn both spotted me talking to the strange boys and quickly got out the pool to join us.

“Well, this is my best friends, Brian and Jyn.” I introduced.

Paul’s eyes landed on Jyn and never left. Jyn, I had to admit, was beautiful. She was a little shorter than me, probably 5’1. She had lightly tanned skin and a very slim body. Her hair was pitch black, wavy and fell down to her a*s whenever it was out. Her eyes were huge and just as black as her hair. She looked like a mesmerizing goddess.

Scott, on the other hand, was avoiding all eye contact with me. I glanced at Brian who was eyeing Scott suspiciously.

“So, do you boys surf?” I asked.

“Well, Scott does, I’m just started learning.” Paul answered, still looking at Jyn who was now blushing. “Scott’s the pro.”

“Oh really?” I kept my eyes on Scott. “Care to show us some of your moves?”

“Sure.” Scott looked at Brian. “Mind if I borrow your board?”

“Go ahead.” Brian shoved the board towards Scott.

“I saw you surfing earlier.” Scott said to me as he walked towards the water. “How about a little surf off?”

My weakness is when someone challenges me. I glared at him, grabbed my board and followed him into the water. We swam out to the higher waves and sat on our boards waiting for the waves.

“How do you know Jeremy?” I wondered.

“I’m Eric.” He grinned at me.

Jeremy always talked about his best friend, Eric. He and Eric seemed to be inseparable. He told Eric everything and Eric told him everything. They had been best friends since first grade, and nothing seemed to break up the friendship.

“But, he said your name was Scott.” I frowned.

“My full name is Eric Scott Devlin.” Scott sighed. “I prefer, Scott.”

“Oh, ok.” I began to paddle as I saw a wave come towards us.

Scott followed my example and we both ended up on the same wave. I glared at him as he tried to surf too close to me. I yelled to him to back off, but he had lost control of his board and was heading directly for me. I screamed as his board collided with mine, throwing me off and into the wave. Scott fell in with me and grabbed onto my hand. We spun in circles under the wave and tried to swim to the surface. I watched him let go of my hand and kick his way to the surface.

My foot was still attached to the board, and the board was stuck under a rock. I struggled with the strap, but I couldn’t detach it. As the last bit on air in me went out, my eyes fluttered close, and my last thought was of Brian.

I was still slightly conscious, but slowly going dead, when I felt someone grab my hand and pull me to the surface. He opened my mouth and shot air down my throat, making my eyes shoot open and water spurt out of my mouth from my coughing fit. I saw Scott dive back down again and resurface a few seconds later with my board in his hand. He pulled my hand over the board as he dove down again to get his board. Once he had resurfaced again, he attached his strap to his leg and swam towards the shore, pushing my board with me on it, and letting his board float behind him.

“No, Sammy!” Brian screamed as he ran up to us.

Brian picked me up and carried me to the shore. He placed me in a lying down position properly. He stared into my glossy eyes as his eyes started to well up.

“I’m ok . . .” I whispered.

He smiled wide as he hugged me to himself. I sat up slowly and looked up at Scott, who was now hovering over me.

“You’re not ok.” He shook his head and pulled me to my feet. “I’ll take you home.”

“It’s ok.” Brian stepped forward. “I’ll do it.”

“I got her.” Scott gave Brian a warning look. “This is my fault after all.”

Scott scooped me into his arms and began walking up the hill. I glanced back at everyone staring at us. Brian looked as if he was ready to kill Scott after realizing it was Scott’s fault.

“He’s angry with you now.” I murmured.

“I know. He has every right to be.” Scott looked down at me and smiled slightly. “I truly am sorry, Sammy. I never meant to hurt you.”

“It’s alright.” I sighed. “In my mind, if I had to die, I would rather have died by the ocean.”

“You shouldn’t be thinking about your death.” Scott grinned as he stepped into the house.

He made his way to the top of the stairs and I pointed to my room. He laid me down in the bed gently and went to get a wet cloth. He quickly returned and placed it over my forehead. He sat down on the side of the bed and gently began to press the cloth around my forehead.

“You’re going to get a major headache.” He whispered as he stared into my eyes.

I was immediately mesmerized. It was as a vampire was putting me under a trance. I reached up gently and cupped his cheek.

“No . . .” he said huskily, causing me to freeze in midair. “I swore to Jeremy . . . I won’t like you.”

“Jeremy is just my brother.” I said gently. “What I do with my life is my own business.”

I leaned up and kissed him gently. Before I knew what was happening, Scott was laying on top of me, moving his tongue in and out of my mouth. My legs were wrapped around his waist, giving him encouragement. I moaned softly, causing him to pull away.

“I can’t go that far.” He admitted. “I can’t . . .”

“Neither can I.” I said, honestly.

“Oh, but I do like you.” He blushed a bit. “Tell me, would you go out with me? We’re staying in the Hilton Hotel for the next month.”

“Sure.” I nodded, not even realizing what I was saying.

“Great.” He smiled, and saw my phone on the dressing table.

He grabbed it and punched in his number. Then he sent a text to his phone.

“Now, I have your number.” He kissed my head. “I’ll call you tomorrow.”

I nodded and watched him climb off of me and quickly walk out the door.
