ChimesA Poem by Samantha YoungChimes I hated when the clock chimed, Five times. I hated hearing the tires screech, As the car pulled up to the front of the
house. I hated the echo of the slamming door, Hard enough to shatter glass. I hated running out back, Just to avoid her seeing me. I hated the bang! Her purse landing on the dining table. I hated the voice yelling, “Sam! Get in here!” I hated how terrified I became, With just one look at her. I hated her iron hand, That struck me like a whip to a race
horse. I hated her smirks that formed, With each whimper I made. I hated the smug look on her face, When she was finally tired. I hated staring at the mirror, Seeing all the blue and black marks. I hated wearing long sleeves, So my father wouldn’t see. I hated when the clock chimed, Six times. I hated the way my heart leapt happily, Hearing his footsteps from the porch. I hated him hugging me, Reminding me that he was my savior. I hated looking into my father’s eyes, Lying “Everything’s fine.” © 2010 Samantha YoungAuthor's Note
