The Sealgaire Clan

“Jump kick!” Brayden ordered. “Spin kick and throw!”

I jumped, turned and threw the hira-shuriken at the dummy in front of me. The shuriken sliced through the dummy’s shoulder blade perfectly.

“Not too bad.” Brayden pulled the shuriken from the wall and threw it to me.

“Are you kidding?” I snapped, catching my favorite weapon easily. “That was a perfect hit!”

“You can never be perfect.” Brayden began to preach. “You never know how those filthy weres will attack. Don’t ever forget our parents’ death.”

Brayden had been repeating the same lecture for over three years, ever since our parents’ fatal fight. I knew deep down in his heart that he blamed himself. Part of me blamed him as well, but I would never tell him that to his face.

Our parents were the heads of the one of the best hunter clans in the world; The Sealgaire Clan. They hunted and killed dangerous supernatural creatures, especially werewolves. On the night of their death, Brayden had wandered off into the woods, alone. Our parents ran off to find him after a few hours. They found him standing in front of an entire pack of werewolves. Our father ordered him to run home while he fought alongside our mother. They killed the entire pack, but their own wounds were too fatal. They died on their way back to the house.

Brayden couldn’t explain why he didn’t fight. He still didn’t understand what caused him to freeze at the sight of the weres. All he knew was that he needed more training. After our parents’ death, Brayden became the new head of the Sealgaire Clan by order of the Hunter’s Association.

Being members of the Clan, my younger brother, Dax, and I were forced to follow in our brother’s footsteps. We all trained on a daily basis to prepare ourselves for the Hunter Association’s assignments. What made our clan, and a few others, different and more powerful than other clans was that members of our clan are possessed with rare magical abilities. Brayden has the ability to gain increasing strength and energy while fighting. Dax has the ability of flash. He can make himself appear and disappear from place to place, no matter the distance between each place. My ability is the control any object with my mind.

“You don’t have to tell me that speech every day.” I grumbled.

“I will repeat it until I believe you understand it.” He snapped.

“Whatever.” I shook my head, placed the shuriken in my waist and walked towards the door of the training room.

“You have another hour of training!” he shouted to me. “Get back in position.”

“Leave her.” Dax whispered as he flashed in front of Brayden.

I glanced back at Brayden, only to see him shaking with anger. I nodded to Dax, who still surprised me with his growth spurt, and walked out the room.

Although we were all siblings, we looked nothing alike. Brayden, 22 years old, was 6’2 in height and had shoulder length, dark red hair. His body was lean from training and naturally tanned. His eyes were dark brown and turned red whenever he was fighting.

Dax, the baby in the family, was only fourteen years old and had already grown to a 5’9 height. He liked to keep his light brown hair cut short and spiked. For a young boy, his body was oddly muscular. His eyes were amber and glowed when he fought.

Unlike my brothers, I was short, only 5’1 in height. My hair was midnight black, long and wavy. My eyes were light gray and turned completely white when I fought. I had a slender figure that I was proud of from all my years of training.

I walked up the stairs to the living room and flopped down on the couch. Tonight was my night to cook dinner, so I grabbed the phone on the coffee table and ordered some Chinese food. I grabbed my book from the table and continued reading. It was the last book on my summer wish list, and since it was the last day of summer, I had to finish it.

“Why aren’t you cooking?” Brayden snapped as he appeared in the living room.

“I did.” I replied. “It’ll be here in 30 minutes. I ordered Chinese food.”

“Oh, did you order pork dumplings?” Dax jumped into the seat next to me.

“Of course.” I reached over and ruffled his hair.

“Well, we might as well have the talk now.” Brayden moved to stand in front of us. “This is your last year, Misty, try to keep your grades up as usual. With all A’s, you’re heading for the spot of valedictorian, like me.”

“It’s what dad wanted.” I mumbled. “That’s the only reason I’m doing it.”

“I know.” He turned to Dax. “Dax, no fighting, no skipping and nothing lower than a C.”

Dax smirked but nodded his head. I held back my smile and glanced at Brayden, who was fuming with anger from the look on Dax’s face.

“Why don’t we just relax tonight and watch a movie or something?” I quickly suggested.

“Lord of the Rings?” both boys asked at the same time.

I nodded my head and leaned back as Brayden searched for the DVD.

Logan Obair stared at the parking lot around him. There was a scent that seemed vaguely familiar to him. He couldn’t track or remember the scent. He shook his head and parked his 2005 Acura NSX in the first free space. He grabbed his bag and climbed out the car. The scent hit him full on; water lilies and cherry blossoms.

“Misty!” someone ahead of him called out. “Wait!”

Logan looked further ahead and saw her. Misty Sealgaire. The girl who had shattered his heart two years ago. He remembered the first time he saw her . . .

Her hair was shorter then and it was always loose. She was at the beach. It was the first day of summer and she was lying on the sand with her eyes closed. As he walked up to her, he couldn’t help but think of how beautiful she was.

“Hi.” He greeted as he flopped down next to her.

She slowly opened her eyes and smiled at him. She pulled herself up and leaned back against her elbows.

“What’s up?” she grinned at him.

“Nothing really, just enjoying the first day of summer. You?” he couldn’t pull his eyes away.

“Same.” She stared out at the ocean. “Are you from around here?”

“Nope.” He sighed. “I’m from Virginia. My family and I are staying in my dad’s beach house, at the end of the beach.”

“Oh, that’s cool.” She smiled wider. “I always wondered who owned that house.”

“Misty!” someone from the house behind them shouted. “We have to go!”

“Ok!” she yelled as she stood up. “Sorry, I’m heading into town with my brothers.”

“Oh ok.”  He stood up with her. “I’m Logan.”

“Misty.” She waved and ran towards the house.

He spent every day with her that summer, going to movies, bonfires, barbeques, and picnics in the woods. They had fallen in love fast and neither wanted the summer to end. They had grown so close that she knew every tiny detail about him, except one. A secret he had never revealed to anyone until the end of that summer. Misty didn’t want him to leave and had suggested they try a long distance relationship. He had instantly agreed, since he couldn’t bear the image of another guy dating her.

On his last day at the beach, he took her for a hike in the nearby woods, where they usually have their private picnics. Once they got to a secluded clearing, he kissed her cheek and stepped away, dropping his bag on the floor.

“There’s something I have to show you.” He began. “I’ve never shown anyone, but I feel like I can trust you.”

“Of course you can.” She gave him a sweet smile. “Nothing can stop me from loving you, Logan.”

“I hope so.” He closed his eyes and gave in to the change.

His arms and legs extended. His face became longer and his mouth protruded out and widened. His clothes ripped apart as his entire body grew and became covered in glossy black hair. His eyes remained the same clear blue. He became taller and more muscular.

“You’re a . . . werewolf.” She whispered, shaking her head and stepping back.

He nodded his head and took a step towards her. She jumped further back and pulled out a silver chain from her pocket with the Sealgaire Hunter Clan crest pendant dangling from it.

“I . . .” she tried to say. “I’m a hunter.”

To him, it didn’t matter, because his family’s pack never attacked or hunted anyone. In fact, some members of his family worked for the Hunter Association, because of how different they were to other werewolves. He also didn’t care what she was because he loved her too much to care. Unfortunately, to her, it did matter. She turned around and ran away. She ignored his visits to her house that night. She ignored his phone calls and texts. He never heard or saw her again till that day in the parking lot.

He knew he was most likely going to see her again, but he didn’t know that all the feelings he had buried away in him would’ve instantly re-surfaced at the sight of her.

***

I recognized Kyo’s voice immediately. Kyo Kumori had been my best friend for as long as I could remember. We always spent 10 months together before he went back to his homeland, Nagasaki, Japan, for the summer. I turned around and ran down the steps to the black haired, muscular boy.

“Kyo!” I yelped as I dove into his awaiting arms.

He hugged me tightly and kissed my cheeks. I pulled away and smiled. Nothing had changed about him. He was still 5’10. His hair still had electric blue streaks. His eyes were still uniquely violet.

“How was Japan?” I asked as we headed into the building.

“Ugh.” He groaned. “Too much training.”

Kyo Kumori was the next heir to the Kumori Hunter Clan. The Kumori Clan, like my family, also possessed rare magical gifts. Kyo’s special ability was to control anything that was or could be a liquid substance. An amazing gift that comes in handy since we lived along the coast.

“How was your summer?” he asked as we walked into AP history.

“Brayden is getting worse.” I sighed. “He won’t stop training.”

“Well, Yuki came back with me.” Kyo grinned at me. “Maybe he can distract Brayden. Oh, we’re having dinner tonight at my place, Yuki wanted me to invite you and your brothers.”

Yuki Kumori was Kyo’s older cousin and the current head of the clan. He had been friends with Brayden for as long as I could remember.

“Definitely.” I grinned. “Are you making sticky rice?”

“Alright, settle down!” Mr.  James quickly brought the class to order. “This is your last year, so let’s try to actually pay attention " ”

The door to the classroom opened, interrupting his speech.

“Can I help you?” Mr. James asked.

The tall boy stepped up to him with his back to the class. He handed the teacher a piece of paper.

“Ah, excellent.” Mr. James folded the paper and handed it back. “Class, this is Logan Obair. He just joined us. Be nice.”

I felt my heart drop as I stared into those familiar blue eyes. Logan was still 6’4, but more muscular than the last time I saw him. His hair was the same, pure black and shaggy. As his eyes roamed the class and landed on mine, a realization struck me. I was still in love with Logan.

I stared at him dumbly as he walked towards the desk behind me. I took a deep breath and stared at my books. I tried to focus on Mr. James as he rattled on about the middle ages, but I faltered shamefully.

“You ok?” Kyo asked as the bell rang.

“Um . . .” I quickly turned to him.

“Misty . . .” Logan whispered from behind me.

“Yea?” I breathed, slowly turning to face him.

“Can we . . . talk?” he glanced at Kyo but focused on me.

“Sure.” I squeaked. “Kyo, I’ll see you at lunch.”

I already knew the confused look Kyo was giving me, but I still gave him a reassuring smile and followed Logan outside.

“Where’s a safe place?” he asked.

“Come.” I muttered.

I quickly led him through the crowded hallway and out the building. I headed for the arts building and walked into the music room. It was an old room which no one used anymore, except for storage. I walked over to the dust covered piano and dropped my bag.

“What do you need to talk about?” I asked, not turning to face him.

I couldn’t look at him. Once I saw his face, my usual expressionless face instantly became covered with all my mixed up emotions.

“Why did you run?” he dropped his bag on the floor.

“Because you are a werewolf.” I snapped. “I am a hunter. I’m supposed to kill you. It was never going to work out.”

“You don’t even know if it would have worked out, because you never even tried.” He spat back.

“Whatever.” I shrugged, still looking the other way.

“I thought you loved me.” He whispered. “I exposed my family’s secret to you because I trusted you.”

“Shows what you know!”

“Why are you being so hostile?” I felt him step closer to me.

“Because you shouldn’t be talking to me.” I clenched my fists.

Acting like I hated him was harder than I thought it would’ve been

“Look at me.” He gently touched my shoulder.

“No!” I slowly began to shake.

He growled as he grabbed both my shoulders and spun around. “Misty, you " ”

I lost it. The remaining strings of my control finally snapped, allowing my emotions to run freely.

“I ran away because I was scared and angry.” I rambled. “I was scared because if my family knew what you were, then the guy who I thought was my true love would’ve been killed. I got angry because I saw them killing you in my head. I couldn’t let you die over me. I loved you too much, so I ran. I wanted you to think that you made a mistake. I wanted you to hate me and forget about me.”

“Misty . . .” he shook his head, pulled me closer, and covered my lips with his.

I gave in. I quickly wrapped my arms around his neck and pressed my lips harder against his. After two years of trying to forget about him, and failing, I wanted nothing else but to be with him.

“Are you sure we can do this?” I whispered against his lips. “I don’t want you to get hurt because of me.”

“They can’t touch me unless the association orders them to.” Logan pulled away from me slightly. “Which they won’t because I haven’t done anything.”

I jumped slightly as the second bell blared.

“I’ve got to get to class.” He kissed my head and walked over to his bag. “I’ll meet you in the parking lot after school.”

I watched him run out the room to get to his class and grabbed my backpack. I walked out the room and headed over to my English class. I couldn’t concentrate on the Beowulf lecture. The only thing on my mind was the trouble I just got myself into. I loved Logan, there was no doubt about that, but I couldn’t live with myself if he got hurt because of me. I know that he had reassured me that nothing was going to happen to him, but if I knew Brayden, he would not accept his little sister dating a were.

Once class was over, I headed towards the cafeteria. I grabbed a sandwich from the rack, paid, and made my way to Kyo’s table.

“So, what did he want?” Kyo inquired as I sat down.

“Um . . .” I took a bite of the sandwich. “I met him a couple of summers ago. He just wanted to catch up.”

“You met a werewolf a few summers ago and you didn’t kill him?” Kyo eyes narrowed suspiciously at me.

“How did you know he was were?” I gaped at him astonished.

“Really Misty?” Kyo snapped. “I’m a hunter. I sensed him!”

“Why couldn’t I sense him?” I wondered out loud.

“Because you don’t have that ability.” He rolled his eyes as he shook his head. “You should’ve killed him.”

“The association has rules.” I pointed out. “You are not to kill anyone unless the association orders you to, or if it’s out of defense. Therefore, we have no justifiable right to kill him.”

“Why are you sticking up for one of them?” Kyo stood up and towered over me. “Have you forgotten what they did to your parents?”

He did nothing to my parents.” I stared down at my sandwich as anger slowly overtook me.

“He’s still one of them!” Kyo’s eyes slowly began to glow bright purple.

“Just because he’s one of them, that does not make him evil, or responsible for what happened!” I stood up at glared at him.

“I don’t trust him! We are trained to hate his kind!” Kyo slammed his fists on the table. “Stay away from him.”

“You can’t order me around.” I knew my eyes were completely white, but I didn’t care.

“You’re betraying your kind if you befriend him.” Kyo growled as the bell rang.

I jumped slightly and glanced around the room. Every eye in the room was directed at us. I shook my head, grabbed my bag and walked off. Kyo grabbed me from behind and pinned me against the lockers.

“Your father died protecting his family from them.” He hissed. “And now you’re going to accept them? Was your father’s death really in vain? Was it all for nothing?”

“It was not all for nothing.” I whispered as tears came to my eyes from thinking of my father. “But I know Logan is not evil.”

Kyo released his hold on me and took a side step. He stared at me as if he couldn’t recognize me anymore.

“Damn it!” I pushed away from Kyo, turned on my heel and walked to class. I tried to focus on the rest of my classes, but I couldn’t stop thinking about Kyo’s face. I loved Kyo, and hurting him was the last thing I wanted to do, yet I felt as if I had already done just that.

Once the last bell rang, I quickly gathered my things and ran to meet  Logan in the parking lot. Logan pulled me into a tight embrace as soon as he saw my sad expression. I quickly told him about Kyo.

“Look, we’ll have to lay low . . .” Logan whispered. “At least until everyone has gotten used to the fact that my family and I are not evil.”

“I agree.” I nodded my head and kissed his lips lightly. “I have to head home. Brayden wants to practice, and we have to be at Kyo’s house later for dinner.”

“Alright.” Logan kissed me again, with more passion than I expected. “Call me when you get back from Kyo’s.”

I nodded my head, got into my car and drove off.

***

Logan waited for Misty to leave the parking lot before getting into his car and driving home. He headed along the coast and drove into his driveway. He groaned as he saw his father’s car already sitting in the parking spot. He killed the engine and climbed out the car.

“Logan!” Cole, his younger brother, yelled as he ran down the driveway.

Logan grinned, picked him up and hugged him tightly. He carried him into the house and smiled at his mother.

“Welcome home.” His mother took Cole from him and placed him on the ground so she could hug Logan. “Your father got done early. He’s in the study. Go talk to him. He wants to see you.”

Logan nodded his head and walked across the hall to the study.

“Come in, Logan.” His father ordered before Logan could knock.

His father knew it was him because of the rare ability werewolves possessed. They were able to hear each other’s thoughts no matter how far away they were physically. This ability was the one reason Logan hated being a werewolf. He had no privacy whatsoever.

“Hey dad.” Logan closed the door behind him.

“She’s a hunter.” His father placed the book he was reading on the desk. “And you love her.”

“Dad, I know it’s wrong.” Logan began. “But if you give me a minute to explain, I "”

“Don’t talk!” his father snapped, lifting his head to stare directly at Logan. “I get it. You love her. However, our kind has rules. We must mate and be with our own. So, when do you plan on turning her?”

“Dad . . . I can’t do that . . . she’s a hunter. She could never become the one thing she’s supposed to kill.” Logan stared at his father in shock.

“She won’t be the only one who’s done it.” His father shrugged and turned his back. “If you want to be with her, that is what must be done.”

***

“When are you going to tell Brayden about Logan?” Kyo snapped as he pulled me aside from the dinner table. “I saw you two in the parking lot. I know it’s more than just a mere friendship. Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because of how you reacted to finding out what he was.” I pulled away from his grasp.

“I’m sorry.” Kyo sighed sadly. “I should’ve had more trust in you. You’re reasoning has always been sound. If you trust this werewolf, then I should trust him too.”

“So, you’re not going to tell Yuki, or Brayden?” I pleaded.

“No.” Kyo shook his head for emphasis. “Not until I sense something’s wrong.”

I hugged Kyo tightly and kissed his cheeks. I knew he was my best friend for a reason.

***

After a month of secretly dating behind my brother’s back, I finally realized how much I loved Logan. We did everything together that we could possibly do. We were together between classes, during lunch, after school, and on the weekends.

Kyo had started to like Logan as well, and covered for us most of the time. If we were physically away from each other, we would end up calling each other and talking all night long.

It was during these talks that the topic of becoming a werewolf came up. Logan’s family was insisting that he turned me. Even after meeting me themselves, they still wanted him to turn me. I had to admit, as I thought about the idea of becoming a werewolf, I liked it. I was tired of the way Brayden talked about how horrible the werewolves were. I was tired of all the training. I was tired of everything that Brayden wanted me to do.

Becoming a werewolf would’ve taken me away from Brayden and his small mindedness. I knew that if I chose the path  of a werewolf, Dax would side with me, because he would understand my reasoning. I loved Brayden, but we were too different.

After another month of dating, I finally confided in Kyo about my decision to become a werewolf, even though I had not told Logan as yet. Telling Kyo was a big mistake.

***

“We kill him tonight!” Brayden growled.

“Let’s re-think this.” Yuki Kumori began pacing the room.

We were all in the meeting room underneath the training room. Kyo had raced home after school and confided to Yuki about what I told him, who decided that Brayden had a right to know. Brayden became so enraged that not even Dax could calm him. As soon as I stepped into the house that afternoon, Dax dragged me to the meeting room where the other three boys waited, all the while warning me that Brayden was upset.

“He hasn’t done anything wrong!” I stood in the middle of them. “Just leave him alone.”

“Why are you so defensive for this one were?” Dax wondered aloud.

All eyes turned to me and froze in place. I glanced around and stopped on Dax’s face.

“Because I’m in love with him.” I whispered.

I never saw a room filled with so many different expressions at once. Brayden’s face remained enraged, but Dax’s was thoughtful. Kyo had a shocked expression, but Yuki looked . . . surprisingly . . . hurt.

“He dies tonight!” Brayden exclaimed before he stormed out the room.

“No . . .” I shook my head and sprinted out the room.

I grabbed my car keys, jumped in the car and drove off, ignoring Brayden screaming after me. I sped along the coast until I came to Logan’s house. I parked and quickly ran up to the front door. I ignored the doorbell and banged my fist on the door. Cole opened the door.

“What?” he folded his arms and glared up at me.

“Um . . . hi.” I forced a smile. “Is Logan here?”

“Yeah?” he gave me a one over look.

“Be nice, Cole.” Logan pulled him away from the door. “What’s wrong?”

He stepped onto the porch and closed the door behind him. He gently grabbed my hand and led me towards the woods behind his house.

“They’re coming to kill you.” I blurted out. “They want you away from me, and this is the only way to them.”

“My family aren’t happy either.” He released my hand and stepped away from me. “They want me to turn you. I told them I couldn’t do it.”

“If you turn me, then I can be with you forever, and my family can’t kill you because I won’t be part of their family anymore.” I looked up at him hopefully. “I love you, Logan . . . I’ve been thinking about this . . . do it.”

“I’m not going to make you give up your entire life for me.” Logan shook his head. “I can’t take you from your family.”

“The only people I’m going to miss are Dax and Kyo. But I’m positive they’ll accept me.” I insisted. “Do it . . . turn me.”

“It’s going to hurt.” He whispered as he stepped up to me. “Are you sure?”

“Yes.” I closed the space between us and stared into his eyes.

He nodded his head as his entire body committed to the change. I closed my eyes as I felt his mouth cover my neck. I cried out as his teeth dug into my skin. I felt my blood trickle down my arm as the venom in his teeth mixed into my system. My eyes shot open as immense pain shot through my body.

“No! Misty!” I heard Brayden scream before Logan pulled away and turned to him.

My knees weakened as I fell to the floor. The pain was overtaking me. I looked up and tried to yell to Logan as he faced the four hunters. I clutched my stomach in pain as I watched Logan grab Brayden by his throat and throw him against one of the trees. Brayden screamed out in agony as a cracking sound escaped from his back.

I moved my eyes from Braden’s limp body and locked them on Kyo. My pain was slowly decreasing, but I still couldn’t move. Kyo’s face was full of regret. His body was frozen in place as he stared at me.

I looked over at Logan, who was facing Yuki, and tried to move. Yuki was one of the best hunters. There was no way Logan could fight him and win. I needed to stop it.

Logan pounced on Yuki, who easily dodged the attack and pulled out his silver bullet gun. I stood up slowly as all the previous pain disappeared and got replaced with a new strength.

“Logan!” I screamed as he tried to attack Yuki again, but failed.

Yuki jumped over Logan’s attack and threw a dagger from his waist at Logan; the fatal strike that made him so notorious. The dagger pierced Logan’s chest as he turned around to attack Yuki again. Even with the wound, Logan’s strength didn’t alter. He pinned Yuki down and growled at him fiercely. Yuki kicked him off and pulled the trigger before Logan could go for another attack.

“No!” I fell to my knees as Logan’s limp body fell to the ground.

Yuki pulled the dagger out, wiped it and walked over to me. I felt the new werewolf in me rising to the surface as the anger inside of me grew.

“I’m sorry Misty.” He whispered. “You know this is the only way.”

I stood up and glared at him as he raised his dagger. I grabbed his wrist, as he brought it down to my chest, and bent his hand back, causing him to drop the dagger. I grabbed his throat and threw him aside. He crashed into a tree and fell limply to the ground. I stared at the dagger and used my powers to make it shoot across the clearing to Yuki’s chest.

I glanced over at Brayden who was still unconscious. I walked over to Kyo, who was still frozen in his place.

“Misty . . .” Dax flashed and appeared in front of me. “Take the body and run. I won’t let them kill you today.”

“Dax . . . I must avenge him.” I whispered.

“I know.” Dax leaned down and kissed my cheeks. “However, enough blood has been spilled today. Go.”

He was right.

I walked over to Logan’s body and scooped him into my arms, thanks to my new strength. I slowly walked away from the scene, but Dax’s voice made me stop in my tracks.

“The next time we meet, I will have to kill you.” He walked over to Brayden’s body.

“I’ll be waiting.”

I broke into a run and headed back to Logan’s house. I was a werewolf now. I needed to find a pack that could help me. This was my new destiny, even though I knew that it was only going to be a matter of time before the real battle occurred. I was already dreading that day. I did not want to have to kill my little brother, but I was no longer one of them. I was going to have to kill him.

Thanks Dutch Jr. To be honest, this is just like a synopsis of the actual book I wrote. I just needed a small synopsis for one of my classes, so I did a sort of summary of the book into this story. Thanks for the comment, I'll polish it up for sure! XD

This piece is written outstandingly well, first off. You avoided a lot of awkward wording and your style and flow are so elquent. Needs a bit of polishing and tying, but overall great job.

As for the story itself, there's a random jump from first person POV to third POV early in the story, when Logan remembers Misty. I'm not saying that it should be omitted altogether, but it can become a prologue or something. Or maybe Misty can tell that story of how she met Logan when she sees him for the first time in the classroom, like a flashback. Your plot is very interesting, and I'm really a fan of it. But it seems rushed in some places, so I think it can be developed into a novel. For instance, when Logan and Misty have their conversation in the music room, your reader can't really feel the passion and love between the two characters, because you haven't given us enough to go on. If you wrote this as a novel, there will be plenty of room to develop the relationship, thus creatingmore passion for the reader, and caring about your characters. A plot like this needs a lot of character development, because a romance is basically driven by the passion between the characters. But great job, and I would love to read more.
