Angelflower

Angelflower

A Story by Samantha Davros

Sadie grabs Esther’s hands and gently pulls her to the center of the room, where the single-candle chandelier glows brighter than the sun on a rainy day. The two young girls sway slowly back and forth, twisting around the room in a flourish circles, like a sliver of a sapling trying to fade into the blue. They hold on to each other as they tiptoe gracefully around the quiet dance floor. Neither needs music, while each others’ breathing brings an intensely calming melody to the both of them. Their eyes flutter shut and stay this way; they pretend it to last, one whole eternity.  Esther’s pale eyes blink open while Sadie’s remain closed, until her breath catches, causing Sadie to falter in her careful steps. Her eyes are open now too. Esther leans slightly forward, her breath dolefully escapes into the air, like it’s the last her lungs will ever do for her. The remaining space between them shies away allowing the two dreaming angels  to touch. Sadie tucks Esther’s dull stray hairs behind her as their noses touch.  One of Esther’s slight hands rests at Sadie’s waist, and the other is placed on her velvet cheek. Their soft and patient lips lace together like a tenderly crafted flower crown.
