Chapter 1

A Chapter by Samantha

I gently plucked the strings on my guitar, nervously fine tuning it for the audition. I waited for the moment when they would call mine and my friend’s names. I glanced at her and saw that she was staring into space and tapping a random beat on her leg.

"Ashley, are you nervous?" I asked. She looked slightly startled, and blinked as if coming out of a deep thought.

"Um, yeah. Very!" She almost whispered, knitting her eyebrows together. I tried to give her a reassuring smile.

"Don’t worry! We’ll do great! We’ve rehearsed I don’t know how many times. Just pretend we’re doing this for fun instead of an audition." I grinned just as a door opened at the far end of the room and a woman stuck her head out, calling our names. My glimmer of confidence was crushed and the smirk slid from my face as I stood with shaky legs to follow her back to the studio.

She lead us down a long beige colored hallway, littered with previously signed bands’ posters, framed records and awards hanging along the walls. Finally we came to a door at the end of the hall marked "Recording Studio." I took a deep breath as we stepped into the room. When I walked in I noticed a long row of controls, with countless buttons to adjust volume, contrast, etc. Behind this was sitting the man who I assumed was the manager. He smiled at us while we filed into the room.

"Hi, I’m Isabelle." I returned his smile and shook his hand, then stepped aside for Ashley to introduce herself.

"Nice to meet you. Are you ready?" He replied, gesturing to the sound booth I hadn’t noticed before, across from the control panel. We nodded and hesitantly took our places at the mics behind the glass window in the booth. The woman who had escorted us here handed us headphones then closed the soundproof door and at about that time a small click could be heard followed by the manager’s voice pouring through the headset.

"Can you hear me?" We nodded.

"Good. I’ll give you the cue, and you just sing loudly and clearly into your microphones. Any questions?" I glanced at Ashley and she shook her head. I leaned closer to my mic.

"Nope, we’re good." I smiled at him. He nodded, then looked down at the electronics in front of him before turning back to us.

"Ok! Ready when you are." Ashley gave him thumbs up to show she was calm and confident, but I could see her hand tremble. I smiled slightly then stepped up the microphone and signaled Ashley to do the same. I put my fingers on the strings to play the first note, and counted for us to start at the same time. I began strumming and listened as Ashley’s voice joined in with perfect pitch and smiled as I immersed myself into the song.
